SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ann Hughes-Johnson of Waukegan, who
4passed away on January 5, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was born on July 23, 1925 in
6Charleston, West Virginia; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson graduated from Seminole High
8School in Sanford, Florida in 1943; she subsequently earned her
9Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Stetson University
10in 1949, her Master of Education degree (cum laude) from the
11National College of Education at National Louis University in
121964, and 62 hours towards her Ph.D. in math at Northwestern
13University; she was elected to the honorary Gamma Sigma Epsilon
14Chemistry Fraternity while at Stetson and to the Pi Lambda
15Theta honorary education fraternity while at Northwestern; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson retired in 1985 from an
17education career that spanned over 25 years; she taught at
18Commonwealth School (now Novak-King) in North Chicago, Beach
19Park Elementary School, and Waukegan High School; she also was
20a chemist at Abbott Laboratories for a year before going into
21teaching; and

1    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was an involved member of the
2First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, where she was an elder,
3deacon, singer in the Westminster Choir, and Sunday School
4teacher; she was also very involved in the Trinity Evangelical
5Lutheran Church of Waukegan, where she sang in the choir and
6served on the Church Council and Women's Circle; she was also a
7member of numerous civic organizations, including the Exchange
8Club, the American Association of University Women, the
9Waukegan Township Supervisor's office, the Philanthropic
10Educational Organization, the Women's Club, the Girl Scouts of
11America, the Waukegan Swedish Glee Club, the Waukegan Symphony
12Chorus, and many other bridge, golf, and community
13organizations; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson was preceded in death by her
15loving husband of 52 years, Judge John L. Hughes, and her
16brother, Al Stine; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Ann Hughes-Johnson is survived by her loving
18husband of 18 years, Ralph Vincent Johnson; 4 children, Michael
19(Connie) Hughes, David (Marilyn) Hughes, Steven (Mary) Hughes,
20and Patricia Hughes; 3 step-children, Lynette (John) Carlson,
21Doug (Kathleen) Johnson, and Cindy (Tim Kasper); 11
22grandchildren; 3 1/2 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law,
23Liz Stine; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
3family and friends, mourn the passing of Ann Hughes-Johnson;
4and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Ann Hughes-Johnson as an expression
7of our sympathy.
