SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Karen (nee Campe) Mateyka of Edwardsville, who passed away on February 18, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was born in Lebanon on August 4, 1937 to Harold and Arline (nee Neumann) Campe; she was raised in Lebanon, where she was an honor student and graduate of Lebanon High School; she was awarded a scholastic scholarship to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where she was a cheerleader and member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Society; after moving to Edwardsville, she completed a Bachelor of Science in History and Art History at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville; she married William J. "Bill" Mateyka on November 22, 1957 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka became an active member and served in leadership roles in various Edwardsville organizations, including Junior Service and the YMCA; since 1992, she has been a member of the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission and served as Chairman of the organization; in September of 2000, she received a Local Preservation Award from the Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions; she researched and wrote 5 local landmark applications, a landmark brochure, and coordinated the publication of "Edwardsville: An Illustrated History"; she assisted with the development of the Archi-Room at the Edwardsville Public Library and with the organization of the Route 66 Festival; she spearheaded the effort to rehang the old bank clock, which resulted in Clock Tower Park on Main Street; she chaired the brick street restoration project and was instrumental in the city's purchase of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Edwardsville Rotary Club for her work in preservation and was appointed to the Illinois Historic Advisory Council in November of 2000; she was a board member of the Friends of Col. Benjamin Stephenson House; her dedication to the Stephenson House is noted by her research of the complete genealogy of the Stephenson family; in April of 2007, she published the book "Henry the Stephenson House Mouse: A Diary", detailing the restoration of Col. Benjamin Stephenson's house and the history of the Stephenson family; in May of 2012, she received the Historic Preservation Recognition Award from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for her excellent volunteer work in historic preservation; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Edwardsville; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Jeanne Mateyka; and

WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka is survived by her son, Dan (Denise) Mateyka; her daughter, Sarah L. "Sally" Mateyka; her granddaughter, Taylor Danielle Mateyka; and her sister, Dona (John) Shieppe; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Karen Mateyka, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Karen Mateyka as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
