4 | | veins every year; of these, about 400,000 people develop deep

5 | | vein thrombosis of the legs; and

6 | | WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism, a serious and potentially |
7 | | fatal complication of vein
thrombosis, affects at least 200,000 |
8 | | people in the United States annually; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, The Surgeon General has declared that 100,000, and |
10 | | perhaps as many as 180,000,
individuals die directly or |
11 | | indirectly as a result of deep
vein thrombosis and pulmonary |
12 | | embolism each year; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation, a potentially serious |
14 | | cardiac condition characterized by an
irregular heart rhythm, |
15 | | affects more than 2 million people in the United States and can |
16 | | lead to
thromboembolic strokes; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Through public awareness, the State of Illinois |
18 | | seeks to minimize the frequency of
deep vein thrombosis, |
19 | | pulmonary embolism, and thromboembolism resulting from atrial
|
20 | | fibrillation among all Illinois citizens and those who visit |
21 | | the State; therefore, be it
