SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, More than 600,000 people in the United States are
3estimated to develop venous thromboembolism or clots in the
4veins every year; of these, about 400,000 people develop deep
5vein thrombosis of the legs; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism, a serious and potentially
7fatal complication of vein thrombosis, affects at least 200,000
8people in the United States annually; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Surgeon General has declared that 100,000, and
10perhaps as many as 180,000, individuals die directly or
11indirectly as a result of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary
12embolism each year; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation, a potentially serious
14cardiac condition characterized by an irregular heart rhythm,
15affects more than 2 million people in the United States and can
16lead to thromboembolic strokes; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Through public awareness, the State of Illinois
18seeks to minimize the frequency of deep vein thrombosis,
19pulmonary embolism, and thromboembolism resulting from atrial
20fibrillation among all Illinois citizens and those who visit
21the State; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare October of
32015 as Thrombosis Awareness Month; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of the ongoing
5fight against deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and
6strokes caused by atrial fibrillation.
