| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Anton Joseph "Papa Tony" Cerveny of |
| 4 | | Alamogordo, New Mexico, who passed away on July 22, 2014; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was born in Chicago on May 13, 1918; |
| 6 | | he served in the United States Navy during World War II, |
| 7 | | serving in the Pacific; he later attained his graduate degree |
| 8 | | from Northwestern University; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was a bassoonist for the Chicago |
| 10 | | Symphonic Orchestra, the Longines Symphony Orchestra, the |
| 11 | | Chicago Civic Opera Orchestra, Kryl's Symphony Orchestra, the |
| 12 | | Illinois Symphony, WGN Radio, Sonja Henie's Hollywood |
| 13 | | Orchestra, and several other stage show orchestras; he also |
| 14 | | taught at Wesleyan University; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Anton Cerveny was the director of Virginia area |
| 16 | | bands for 6 years and Harvard High School bands for 28 years, |
| 17 | | building the instrumental music department, culminating in |
| 18 | | multiple State sweepstakes winners and runners-up; in 1973, the |
| 19 | | band participated in an international competition in Vienna, |
| 20 | | Austria, earning top honors; he was one of the early founders |
| 21 | | and ongoing promoters of Harvard Milk Days and was its Grand |
| 22 | | Marshal in 2004; he was inducted into the National Bandmasters |
