2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Beatrice Matthews; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was born in Chicago on May 29, |
5 | | 1926 to Horace Calbert and Edna Brooks; she attended Wendell |
6 | | Phillips elementary and high schools and earned her cosmetology |
7 | | license from Unique Beauty School; she married Ned Matthews in |
8 | | 1946; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews worked at Hazel's and later for |
10 | | the United States Postal Service as a mail handler until |
11 | | retirement; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was a member of Christ Universal |
13 | | Temple, where she obtained a Master Certificate from the |
14 | | Johnnie Coleman Institute; she volunteered for service in the |
15 | | 24-hour Prayer Ministry and served as the first President of |
16 | | the Ambassadors of Love Club; she was a member of the South |
17 | | Side branch of the N.A.A.C.P. Women's Auxiliary; she enjoyed |
18 | | traveling around the world; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was preceded in death by her |
20 | | parents; her husband, Ned; her daughter, Bridget Matthews; her |
21 | | sibling, Gale Wilkins; and her grandchildren, Dino and Nicola; |

2 | | WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews is survived by her children, |
3 | | Christel Davis and Cordell Matthews; her 5 siblings, Hazel |
4 | | Garner-Brooks, Donald Clark (Cheryl), LaVonne Curington |
5 | | (Harold), and Joyce Calbert; her grandchildren, Lavite, Eddie, |
6 | | Cordell (Boo), Jeremy, and Andiana; her 7 great-grandchildren, |
7 | | D'Angelo, Kadoshia, Rickey, Christel, Dominique, Johnette, and |
8 | | Lil John; her 9 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of |
9 | | nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
|
10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of |
12 | | Beatrice Matthews, and extend our sincere condolences to her |
13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
14 | | further

15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
16 | | presented to the family of Beatrice Matthews as an expression |
17 | | of our deepest sympathy.
