SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Henry Szlachta, who passed away on April 19, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Szlachta was born on June 11, 1928 on a small farm in upstate New York; he married Margaret Galloway in May of 1957; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Szlachta attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he spent one year in undergraduate studies before he was accepted into veterinary school; he subsequently earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell, where he was second in his class; during his studies, he did groundbreaking research on the rabies virus that is now included in the Veterinary Pathology Manual; and

WHEREAS, After graduating in 1950, Dr. Henry Szlachta became Director of the research lab at Cornell University; from 1950 to 1953, he served his country in the United States Army Veterinary Corps, serving in both Korea and Japan before receiving an honorable discharge in 1953; and

WHEREAS, In 1953, Dr. Henry Szlachta relocated to northern Illinois and established a farm animal veterinary practice (primarily beef and dairy cattle) in the McHenry and Lake County regions; he practiced for 50 years, plying the rural roads of McHenry and Lake Counties caring for primarily family farmers' beef and dairy herds; he retired in 2003 at the age of 75; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Szlachta was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Szlachta is survived by 2 sons, Scott and Paul; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Dr. Henry Szlachta; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Henry Szlachta as an expression of our sympathy.
