SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Dorothy B. Cornish of Peoria, who
4passed away on July 24, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was born on November 30, 1930,
6in Charleston, South Carolina; her parents were John, Jr. and
7Etta L. (nee Vanderhorst) Greene; she married Herman L. Cornish
8on April 16, 1960 in Peoria; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish earned her Bachelor of Arts in
10Physical Education and Social Science from Tuskegee University
11in Alabama in 1952 and her Ph.D. from Illinois State
12University; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish served with the American Red
14Cross during the Korean Conflict in Seoul, Korea; she later
15taught in Courtland, Alabama before coming to Peoria to serve
16as the director of the girl's and women's programs at the
17Carver Center; she later worked as a teacher and counselor in
18Peoria School District 150 and then taught at Illinois Central
19College in 1970, where she became the first director of the
20Illinois Central College Perley (Downtown) Campus in 1973; she
21retired in 1994 after many years of service; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was a member of St. Vincent de
2Paul Catholic Church, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the
3League of Women Voters, the National Association of University
4Women, and In His Footsteps; she served on various boards,
5including the boards of the Tri-County Urban League, the United
6Way, the Hult Health Center, and Help a Child Scholarship
7Foundation, Inc.; she was also active with Susan G. Komen Race
8for the Cure and founded the Growing Together Program, a joint
9effort between District 150 and Illinois Central College; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was preceded in death by her
11husband, Herman; a brother, Robert L. M. "Bobby" Greene; a
12niece; and a nephew; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish is survived by a son, Kenneth
14(Veara) Cornish; 2 daughters, Janet (George) Davis and Kelly
15(Deron) Robbins; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and
16a great-great-grandson; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
19family and friends, mourn the passing of Dr. Dorothy B.
20Cornish; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Dr. Dorothy Cornish as an expression
