|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Dr. Dorothy B. Cornish of Peoria, who |
4 | | passed away on July 24, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was born on November 30, 1930, |
6 | | in Charleston, South Carolina; her parents were John, Jr. and |
7 | | Etta L. (nee Vanderhorst) Greene; she married Herman L. Cornish |
8 | | on April 16, 1960 in Peoria; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish earned her Bachelor of Arts in |
10 | | Physical Education and Social Science from Tuskegee University |
11 | | in Alabama in 1952 and her Ph.D. from Illinois State |
12 | | University; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish served with the American Red |
14 | | Cross during the Korean Conflict in Seoul, Korea; she later |
15 | | taught in Courtland, Alabama before coming to Peoria to serve |
16 | | as the director of the girl's and women's programs at the |
17 | | Carver Center; she later worked as a teacher and counselor in |
18 | | Peoria School District 150 and then taught at Illinois Central |
19 | | College in 1970, where she became the first director of the |
20 | | Illinois Central College Perley (Downtown) Campus in 1973; she |
21 | | retired in 1994 after many years of service; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was a member of St. Vincent de |
2 | | Paul Catholic Church, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the |
3 | | League of Women Voters, the National Association of University |
4 | | Women, and In His Footsteps; she served on various boards, |
5 | | including the boards of the Tri-County Urban League, the United |
6 | | Way, the Hult Health Center, and Help a Child Scholarship |
7 | | Foundation, Inc.; she was also active with Susan G. Komen Race |
8 | | for the Cure and founded the Growing Together Program, a joint |
9 | | effort between District 150 and Illinois Central College; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish was preceded in death by her |
11 | | husband, Herman; a brother, Robert L. M. "Bobby" Greene; a |
12 | | niece; and a nephew; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Cornish is survived by a son, Kenneth |
14 | | (Veara) Cornish; 2 daughters, Janet (George) Davis and Kelly |
15 | | (Deron) Robbins; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and |
16 | | a great-great-grandson; therefore, be it

17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her |
19 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Dr. Dorothy B. |
20 | | Cornish; and be it further

21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
22 | | presented to the family of Dr. Dorothy Cornish as an expression |
