| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Dr. Timothy Brumleve; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was born in Champaign on March 15, |
| 5 | | 1952 to Mary and Robert Brumleve; he married Dorothy Anderson |
| 6 | | on May 24, 1974 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; he graduated in |
| 7 | | 1969 from University Laboratory High School in Urbana; in June |
| 8 | | of 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the
|
| 9 | | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating with |
| 10 | | high honors and highest departmental distinction in chemistry; |
| 11 | | at the University of Illinois, he was an Edmund J. James |
| 12 | | Scholar, was named to the Bronze Tablet, and received the ACS |
| 13 | | Division of Analytical Chemistry Undergraduate
Award; he |
| 14 | | received his Doctor of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry on |
| 15 | | December 26, 1978 from the University of North Carolina at |
| 16 | | Chapel Hill, where he was the recipient of the first
John |
| 17 | | Motley Morehead Foundation fellowship in chemistry; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was an internationally recognized |
| 19 | | authority on lighting technologies; he was a leader in the |
| 20 | | research and development of industrial lighting; his career in |
| 21 | | chemistry
began in 1970 at Anderson Physics Laboratories, Inc. |
| 22 | | (APL) in Urbana, a company founded by his father-in-law, Dr. |
| 23 | | Scott Anderson; from 1977 to 1978, he was a research and |
|

| 1 | | teaching assistant in chemistry at the University of North |
| 2 | | Carolina; he was a post-doctoral research associate from 1978 |
| 3 | | to 1979 at Colorado State University, where he conducted |
| 4 | | research in electroanalytical chemistry; from 1979 to 1980, he |
| 5 | | taught undergraduate chemistry courses at the State University |
| 6 | | of New York; he returned to APL in 1980, spending the next 9 |
| 7 | | years working as director of research and development; from |
| 8 | | 1989 to 1994, he was a senior scientist at
APL; from 1994 to |
| 9 | | 2013, he was APL's Vice-President of Technology; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve invented multiple materials and |
| 11 | | components for fluorescent and high-intensity discharge lamps, |
| 12 | | resulting in 10 United States patents and pending applications |
| 13 | | as
well as multiple derivative foreign patents; he published |
| 14 | | more than 20 papers in professional journals since 1978 and |
| 15 | | authored 29 professional conference papers in chemistry and |
| 16 | | lamp-related areas; he invented
new zinc-mercury amalgam |
| 17 | | products for fluorescent lamps, which grew into a $2 million |
| 18 | | product line; he served as a member of the organizing committee |
| 19 | | for the International Symposium on the Science and Technology |
| 20 | | of Lighting; in 2013, he started Tim Brumleve & Co., a |
| 21 | | consulting firm specializing in high-temperature materials |
| 22 | | chemistry, discharge lighting, and electroanalytical
|
| 23 | | chemistry; and
|
| 24 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve interests included collecting |
|

| 1 | | antique radios, televisions, test equipment, and vinyl LPs; |
| 2 | | from an early age, he enjoyed playing the organ, winning a
|
| 3 | | statewide organ playing contest; he also had a longtime |
| 4 | | interest in electronics, with his first job as a teenager at |
| 5 | | Radio Doctors in Champaign; he also enjoyed Ham radio and going |
| 6 | | antiquing with his wife,
watching classic television shows and |
| 7 | | movies, and watching golf on weekends; he was a member of the |
| 8 | | Antique Radio Club of Illinois and enjoyed riding and repairing |
| 9 | | his classic Triumph motorcycle; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve was preceded in death by his wife, |
| 11 | | Dorothy, and his parents; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brumleve is survived by his 5 children, Jacob |
| 13 | | Brumleve, Joseph Brumleve, William Brumleve, Catherine Roland, |
| 14 | | and Abraham
Brumleve; his 4 grandchildren, Mary Roland, Clark |
| 15 | | Roland, Timothy Brumleve, and Joshua Brumleve; his |
| 16 | | step-granddaughter, Martha Luca; his sister, Sally Popa; and |
| 17 | | numerous extended family members and friends; therefore, be it
|
| 18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
| 19 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 20 | | Dr. Timothy Brumleve, and extend our sincere condolences to his |
| 21 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
