SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Hattie Hill of Chicago, who passed away
4on July 12, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill was born in Tunica, Mississippi on
6November 6, 1917 to Robert, Sr. and Florence Jagers; during her
7childhood years, she moved to Arkansas to live with her
8grandparents Abe and Sophie; she married Solomon Hill in 1934,
9and they settled in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago in
101936; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill was known for hand-making corsages,
12boutonnieres, hats, shawls, and shoes; she worked briefly at RR
13Donnelley and, later, the Abraham Lincoln Center; she was a
14community activist in Ida B. Wells and had a long-standing
15relationship with the 2nd Ward Democratic Organization, where
16she was a precinct captain; she was known for hosting dinner
17parties, where some of Chicago's premier politicians and
18activists of the time attended, including Richard J. Daley,
19Harold Washington, Eugene Sawyer, John H. Stroger, Hon. Eugene
20Pincham, Al Prichard, Chuck Bowen, Renault Robinson, Rev.
21George Clements, and Dick Gregory; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill worked for the City of Chicago's

1Department of Human Services as a social worker and servant to
2the people of Englewood; the signature program she developed
3with seniors took her around the world; she was commissioned to
4organize a senior group trip to Africa (Kenya), Europe
5(London), and the Bahamas (Nassau); she also arranged local
6outings to many theater productions; she received many honors,
7awards, and letters of commendation; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill decided to go back to school to
9further her education at Wilson Junior College at age 62; she
10loved her garden of beautiful flowers and impressive array of
11vegetables and herbs; she loved to play the card game pitty-pat
12and watch TV game shows and the sitcom The Golden Girls; she
13had fun and games with her grandchildren and took them to
14camps, the race track, and concerts; she had a group of
15girlfriends that called themselves "the go-go girls"; she and
16her husband enjoyed traveling and took many road trips, making
17frequent visits to family and friends around the country; one
18of their favorite locations to visit was Hot Springs, Arkansas;
19for many years, she organized group trips to Dubuque, Iowa for
20the dog races and to Las Vegas casinos; she was known for her
21annual trips to the Kentucky Derby, which she started in 1969
22until the 1990s; she organized as many as 7 buses to the Derby;
23she was also the co-founder of the 7200 South Calumet Block
24Club; and

1    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill and her husband were members of Holy
2Angels Parish and served with the Blessed Sacrament Society and
3Knights of Peter Claver; they enjoyed dancing and music; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill was preceded in death by her parents,
5and her brother, Robert Jr.; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Hattie Hill leaves to cherish her memory: husband,
7Solomon (preceded her in death); sons, Aaron, Solomon Jr.,
8Vincent, and Michael (preceded her in death); daughters, Renee
9Strowhorn-Armer, Cecilia Peeler, and Michele Pondexter
10(Charles); 24 grandchildren, Dwayne, Aaron "Ricky", Daveda
11(preceded her in death), Mark Ivory, Ahmed, Vonzelle, Solomon
12III, Michael (Andrea), Steven, Dion Sr., Cecilia (Darryl),
13Malik, Sharien, Ottro, Jaylen, Sarah, Khaliq, Tonya (Marcus),
14Vincent, Melissa, Paul (Wendy), Kimberly (Marcus), Erika, and
15Monika; 26 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren;
168 great-great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephew, Robbie,
17Bettie, Florence, Kitty, Joey, and Mary and Barbara (who
18preceded her in death); daughters-in-law, Margie, Barbara
19(deceased), Erma, Carolyn, Joyce, and Cheryl; loving Godson,
20Frederick Dunson; long-time friend, Dorothy Kennedy; and many
21cousins, nieces, in-laws, friends, and neighbors; therefore,
22be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Hattie Hill, and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
3friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Hattie Hill as an expression of our
6deepest sympathy.
