| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Zealy Maurice Holmes, who passed away on |
| 4 | | September 5, 2015; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was born on the family farmstead just |
| 6 | | outside Edelstein on December 8, 1922; his parents were Charles |
| 7 | | and Edna (nee Schielein) Holmes; he married Ruth Streitmatter |
| 8 | | at home on June 29, 1944; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes served as a first lieutenant with the |
| 10 | | 89th Infantry Division in the European Theater during World War |
| 11 | | II; he was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for |
| 12 | | his service; despite his distinguished service in the war, the |
| 13 | | veteran dreamed of and worked toward a world of peaceful |
| 14 | | nations cooperating to solve problems; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was an active church and community |
| 16 | | leader; he helped design and shape Illinois Central College |
| 17 | | through his service as president of the founding board; he and |
| 18 | | his wife were also instrumental in forming the Peoria Area |
| 19 | | World Affairs Council in 1970; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was preceded in death by his wife, |
| 21 | | Ruth; and
|
