| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Donald "Doc" Shanower of Naperville, who |
| 4 | | passed away on September 14, 2015; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Donald Shanower was born in Ohio to Merl and Ella |
| 6 | | Shanower; he served in the United States Army during World War |
| 7 | | II, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and earning a Purple |
| 8 | | Heart and other service medals; he earned his bachelor's and |
| 9 | | master's degrees from Kent State University; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Donald Shanower joined the faculty at North |
| 11 | | Central College in 1955 as an assistant professor in the speech |
| 12 | | and theater department; he earned his doctoral degree from the |
| 13 | | University of Michigan 4 years later; he established The Summer |
| 14 | | Place in 1966, creating a source for community theater that |
| 15 | | continues to thrive in the city; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Donald Shanower served as President of the Rotary |
| 17 | | Club of Naperville and volunteered at the Naper Settlement and |
| 18 | | the Bethlehem Center, now known as the Northern Illinois Food |
| 19 | | Bank; he and his wife traveled extensively, and in 1984, he was |
| 20 | | North Central College's first exchange professor to Hirosaki |
| 21 | | Gakuin College in Japan; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The North Central College varsity softball field |
| 2 | | bears the name "Shanower Family Field" in honor of Donald |
| 3 | | Shanower's love of the sport and the loss of his son, Dan, who |
| 4 | | lost his life in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on |
| 5 | | September 11, 2001; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Donald Shanower was preceded in death by his |
| 7 | | parents; his siblings, Molly Jane, Robert, and Paul; and his |
| 8 | | son, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Dan Shanower; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Donald Shanower is survived by his wife of 64 |
| 10 | | years, Patricia; his children, Vicki (Ed) Wike, Paula (Bob) |
| 11 | | Coleman, Tom ('Ana) Shanower, and Jon Shanower; his 8 |
| 12 | | grandchildren, Rachel, John, and Molly Wike, Andrew Coleman, |
| 13 | | Elaine O'Kelley, and Matthew, Nicholas, and Stephanie |
| 14 | | Shanower; and his great-grandchild, Haven O'Kelley; therefore, |
| 15 | | be it
|
| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
| 17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 18 | | Donald "Doc" Shanower, and extend our sincere condolences to |
| 19 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 20 | | further

| 21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
