SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Pastor Ivin Lamont Phillips, Sr. of
4Chicago, who passed away on October 24, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips was born in Chicago on April 7,
61960 to John Wesley and Cora Mae Phillips; he was a member of
7Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, where he was baptized by
8his father and served as a choir member, deacon, and Sunday
9school teacher; he attended Crane High School, Lamar Community
10College, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, playing
11basketball at each; he obtained his TV/radio certification from
12the Illinois Technical Institute and he attended the Washburn
13Trade School, where he became a licensed electrician; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips worked in the electrician field
15for over 20 years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips accepted his call to preach in
171992 and became a licensed and ordained minister; he became the
18Pastor of Hopewell M. B. Church after the passing of his father
19in 1998; he completed the vision started by his dad, moving
20Hopewell from the old location to its present in 2001; he
21served faithfully for 17 years and during his leadership, the
22membership increased and various community outreach programs

1were added; he graduated from Faith Seminary, where he obtained
2his Doctorate in Ministry and Master of Theological Studies; he
3also studied abroad in Israel; he pursued classes at Bill
4Winston Bible College and Moody Bible Institute and was also a
5certified chaplain; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips was fondly known as "Ivo" by his
7basketball buddies and their team, "Cheat You Fair", enjoyed
8several championships together; he coached the Memorial Park
9Traveling Wildcats basketball team and was known as "Coach
10Phillips" to many in the Bellwood Community; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips served as 1st Vice-President from
122010 to 2014 of the Sunlight District Congress of Christian
13Education and taught extensively throughout the State; he was a
14member of the United Baptist State Convention of Illinois; he
15preached at the National Baptist Convention, USA in 2013 and
16served with Inter Faith Illinois and Proviso Township
17Ministerial Alliance Network; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Pastor Phillips is survived by his wife of 25
19years, Jeanette Phillips; his 2 sons, Ivin Lamont Phillips Jr.
20and Jarvis Lamont Phillips; his mother, Cora Mae Phillips; his
218 brothers, John Douglas (Willie Mae), Michael (Juanita),
22Robert (Linda), Elder Jerry (Geraldine), James (Beverly),
23Winston (Cheryl), Minister Autry (Cheryl), and Victor (Kisha);

1his 2 sisters, Gloria and Felicia; his father-in-law, Dennis
2Beasley; his 2 sisters-in-law, Cheryl Beasley and Katrina
3Beasley; his brother-in-law, Tim Beasley; a host of aunts,
4uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church family;
5and his fathers in the ministry, Pastor Curtis Brooks and
6Emeritus C.L. Brookins; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Pastor Ivin Lamont Phillips, Sr., and extend our sincere
10condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
11him; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Pastor Phillips as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
