SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Tanya Uvon Coursey; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Coursey, affectionately known as "Ms. Coursey", was born on September 23, 1967; she graduated from Carrie Jacobs Bond Elementary School in 1981 and Paul Robeson High School in 1985; she obtained an associate degree from Richard J. Daley College in child development in 1990, a bachelor's degree from Chicago State University in education in 2005, a master's degree with honors in teaching from National Louis University in 2008, earning a teaching certificate (pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade), a second master's degree with honors in education from National Louis University in 2012, earning an administrative certificate (school administration/supervision), and an honorary doctorate in educational leadership from National Louis University in 2014; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Coursey worked in the Head Start department at Carrie Jacobs Bond Elementary School for 25 years; she also worked at the Effie O'Ellis Child Development Lab School and served as the Disciplinarian and Program Coordinator at the after school program at Carrie Jacobs Bond Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Coursey served as an executive board member for the Englewood Achievers Block Club Incorporated (72nd Place); she was also the special events coordinator from 2002 until her passing; she was a member of Sacred Heart Church and later St. Sabina Church, where she sung with the Voices of St. Sabina choir; she was most recently a member of New Life Worship Center; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Coursey was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothea Hazeldine Coursey, and her 2 uncles, Robert Coursey and Calvin Coursey; and

WHEREAS, Tanya Coursey is survived by her sons, Thomas and Lawrence Coursey; her sister, Tasha Baker (Edward); her grandchildren, Thomas, Jr., Layah, and Tamiya; her 2 nieces, Tanea and Tajha Igess; her nephew, Shan Igess, Jr.; her 2 aunts, Carol and Gloria Coursey; her uncle, Johnathan Coursey; her 3 Godsons, Armani, Anfernee, and Anthony Couch, Jr.; and a host of relatives and close friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Tanya Uvon Coursey, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Tanya Coursey as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
