SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Michael Kotzin of Highland Park, who
4passed away on October 18, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Michael Kotzin was born in Chicago; he graduated
6from Sullivan High School and received his bachelor's degree
7from the University of Chicago and his doctorate from the
8University of Minnesota; he served in the Israeli army after
9being drafted for the 1973 Yom Kippur War; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Michael Kotzin joined the Anti-Defamation League
11(ADL) in Atlanta, Georgia in 1979; 2 years later, he became
12Regional Director in Columbus, Ohio, and then in 1983, he
13returned to Chicago to head the ADL office; he spent the last
1425 years with the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of
15Metropolitan Chicago, first as Executive Director of the
16organization's Jewish Community Relations Council and then as
17Executive Vice-President; later, he served as a special
18consultant to the President; his involvement in Jewish and
19Zionist organizations came after he spent 11 years teaching
20English literature at Tel Aviv University in Israel; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In 2014, the Jewish United Fund published a book
22by Michael Kotzin, "On the Front Lines in a Changing Jewish

1World", a collection of his essays, opinion columns, speeches,
2and reviews; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Michael Kotzin is survived by his wife, Judith;
4his daughter, Abigail Kotzin; his sons, Daniel and Joshua; his
5sister, Morissa Amitai; and his 8 grandchildren; therefore, be
6it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Michael Kotzin, and extend our sincere condolences to his
10family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Michael Kotzin as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
