SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Yancey B. Torrez of Waukegan, who passed
4away on October 29, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez was born on February 1, 1923 in
6Lorraine, Texas; his parents were Mariano and Maria Torrez; he
7married Amalia Arenas on November 29, 1952 in Waukegan; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez moved to Waukegan in 1929 at the age
9of 5, being among the first Mexican families in Lake County;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez served his country as a member of
12the United States Navy during World War II, attaining the rank
13of Seaman First Class; in 1950, he enlisted in the United
14States Marine Corps, where he achieved the rank of Staff
15Sergeant, and was honorable discharged in 1954; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez was employed at Abbott Laboratories
17and Midland Dexter, where he retired after many years of
18service; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez was a member of the Marine Corps
20League Detachment 801, Lake County, IL, where he participated

1in parades, honor duty, funeral ceremonies, and other
2activities; he also worked with the Kirk Park Neighborhood
3Association and was a founding member of Comite Festejo
4Mexicanos; he was also a member of the American G.I. Forum and
5numerous other veterans groups; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez enjoyed hanging out at McDonald's
7each morning, inspiring the workers and chatting with his
8coffee klatch buddies; he also enjoyed music, woodworking, and
9photography; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez was preceded in death by his wife,
11Amalia; his parents; his brothers, Rafael Torrez and Richard
12Torrez; his grandchildren, Rafael Torrez, Jr. and Christina
13Torrez; and his son-in-law, Juan J. Valle; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Yancey Torrez is survived by his children, Rafael
15Torrez, Martha Valle, Henry "Rick" (Mildred) Torrez, Yolanda
16Torrez (Jose "Joe" Zuniga), Edward (Andrea Terry) Torrez, and
17Hector Torrez; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 6
18brothers and sisters; and his many nieces, nephews, and
19cousins; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
22family and friends, mourn the passing of Yancey B. Torrez; and

4our sympathy.
