| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Philip Michael Doherty, Sr. of East | ||||||
| 4 | Moline, who passed away on November 29, 2015; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was born in New York, New York | ||||||
| 6 | on May 29, 1930; he attended St. Meinrad's Seminary before | ||||||
| 7 | being drafted into the military; he served during the Korean | ||||||
| 8 | War, stationed mainly in Germany and achieving the rank of | ||||||
| 9 | Sergeant; after his service, he attended Marion College in | ||||||
| 10 | Indianapolis, Indiana and Penn State, where he received his | ||||||
| 11 | master's degree in German; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was so taken with Germany that | ||||||
| 13 | he became an associate professor of German, first at Notre Dame | ||||||
| 14 | University and then at Loyola University; he later settled in | ||||||
| 15 | Moline, where he was the German teacher at Moline High School | ||||||
| 16 | for nearly 30 years; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was heavily involved in local | ||||||
| 18 | musical theater at the Quad City Music Guild and taught himself | ||||||
| 19 | to tap dance; he enjoyed telling jokes, storytelling, singing, | ||||||
| 20 | and playing the guitar, the piano, and the accordion; he also | ||||||
| 21 | enjoyed classical music and philosophy; he hated sports but | ||||||
| 22 | loved PDQ Bach, Monty Python, the TV show "Soap", target | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | shooting, and Blatz beer; he played German folk music in the | ||||||
| 2 | background almost all the time on reel-to-reel tape recorders | ||||||
| 3 | he "borrowed" from Moline High School, and, when he took his | ||||||
| 4 | family camping in their pop-up Starcraft camper, he often sang | ||||||
| 5 | folk songs in German and English around the campfire every | ||||||
| 6 | night and made everyone join in; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. was preceded in death by his | ||||||
| 8 | son, Richard; his wife, Anna; his 3 brothers; and his grandson, | ||||||
| 9 | Gabe Mattly; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Philip Doherty, Sr. is survived by his 4 children, | ||||||
| 11 | Colleen Romanelli, Pamela Ramos, Sheila (Mike) Mattly, and Phil | ||||||
| 12 | Doherty; his 4 grandchildren, Branden Engleking, Marisa and | ||||||
| 13 | Karina Ramos, and Nicolas Mattly; and his great-grandchild, | ||||||
| 14 | Philip; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 17 | Philip Michael Doherty, Sr., and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
| 18 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
| 19 | it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the family of Philip Doherty, Sr. as an expression | ||||||
| 22 | of our deepest sympathy.
