| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Carl Leonard LaMarr, Ed.D., who passed |
| 4 | | away on December 10, 2015; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl LaMarr was born on September 20, 1935 in |
| 6 | | Cordele, Georgia; his parents were Jesse and Lela LaMarr; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Music played a very important part of Dr. Carl |
| 8 | | LaMarr's life; his trumpet took him to Chicago to study at the |
| 9 | | Vandercook College of Music; during his service in the United |
| 10 | | States Army, he played his horn in a United States Army band |
| 11 | | and at military funerals; he later taught music in Chicago, |
| 12 | | where he met his future wife, Sonya Frances Saxton; and |
| 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1966, Dr. Carl LaMarr moved his family to |
| 14 | | Alaska to teach native students at a Bureau of Indian Affairs |
| 15 | | boarding school in Wrangell; he later moved to Anchorage, where |
| 16 | | he taught music in the Anchorage School District while he |
| 17 | | continued his education, earning a master's degree from the |
| 18 | | University of Alaska and a doctorate in education and |
| 19 | | administration from the University of Southern California; |
| 20 | | rising through the ranks of school administration of the |
| 21 | | Anchorage School District, first as Deputy Superintendent and |
| 22 | | ultimately serving as Superintendent; and
