SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Carl Leonard LaMarr, Ed.D., who passed
4away on December 10, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl LaMarr was born on September 20, 1935 in
6Cordele, Georgia; his parents were Jesse and Lela LaMarr; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Music played a very important part of Dr. Carl
8LaMarr's life; his trumpet took him to Chicago to study at the
9Vandercook College of Music; during his service in the United
10States Army, he played his horn in a United States Army band
11and at military funerals; he later taught music in Chicago,
12where he met his future wife, Sonya Frances Saxton; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 1966, Dr. Carl LaMarr moved his family to
14Alaska to teach native students at a Bureau of Indian Affairs
15boarding school in Wrangell; he later moved to Anchorage, where
16he taught music in the Anchorage School District while he
17continued his education, earning a master's degree from the
18University of Alaska and a doctorate in education and
19administration from the University of Southern California;
20rising through the ranks of school administration of the
21Anchorage School District, first as Deputy Superintendent and
22ultimately serving as Superintendent; and

1    WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Dr. Carl LaMarr and his
2wife explored the United States in their motor home for 2
3years, occasionally bringing their granddaughters along for
4the journey; they also took their love of traveling overseas to
5visit more than 25 countries; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl LaMarr was preceded in death by his
7siblings, Mamie, Bertha, Nancy, Ethel, Jones King, Jesse,
8Brodis, Catherine, and Mildred; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl LaMarr is survived by his wife of 59
10years, Sonya; his daughters, Carla and Catherine; his
11son-in-law, Herbert; his granddaughters, Gabrielle and
12Genevieve; his sisters-in-law; his many nieces and nephews; and
13his many friends; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
16family and friends, mourn the passing of Carl Leonard LaMarr,
17Ed.D.; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Dr. Carl LaMarr as an expression of
20our sympathy.
