SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Karl Nagel of Lake Forest, who passed
4away on January 13, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was born in Ingolstadt, Germany to
6Maria Barbara Kogel and Georg Friedrick Nagel on February 28,
71912; as a young boy in Bavaria, he enjoyed swimming in the
8Danube River and hiking into the nearby forests with friends;
9he enjoyed playing his mandolin, watching cowboy movies on
10Saturdays, and dreaming of going to America; after graduating
11from Lutherschule at the age of 14, he studied horticulture and
12served a 3-year apprenticeship in a large conservatory in
13Berlin; at the age of 19, he joined his brother, Max, in
14Chicago; and
 
15    WHEREAS, After his arrival in Chicago, Karl Nagel answered
16an ad in a German newspaper for a manager of a commercial
17greenhouse in Lake Forest; he got the job and also met his
18first wife, Cecilia Studeny, working as a cook next door; they
19worked as a couple for 3 years in homes in Lake Forest and
20Highland Park; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was encouraged to try carpentry; his
22first job was at Ft. Sheridan, where German prisoners of war

1were already arriving for detention; a year later, he was
2building his first home in Deerfield for his wife and 2
3children; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Karl Nagel eventually purchased land in West Lake
5Forest, where he built his millwork shop and a small home for
6his family; Lake Forest Millwork was soon known for its fine
7craftsmanship and fair dealings; he crafted the front doors and
8an altar for St. Patrick's Catholic Church; he eventually
9joined his son, Karl F. Nagel in the construction business and
10"Nagel and Nagel" built many homes and developments in Lake
11Forest, Lake Bluff, Waukegan, and Gurnee; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After the passing of his first wife, Karl Nagel
13retired and spent time in his beloved gardens and on fishing
14trips with family and friends; at the age of 91, he married
15Joanne Gustafson, a neighbor and friend of many years and they
16were together in their own home until his 100th birthday; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was the husband of Josephine and the
18late Cecilia; the father of Ruth (the late Col. Arthur) Laehr
19and Karl F. (Barbara) Nagel; the beloved grandfather of Laura
20(Mark) Ashburn, Linda (Mike) Antonio, Lisa (Jim) Branton,
21Matthew (Janet) Nagel, Blair (Becky) Nagel, and Joy (Mark)
22McGreevy; the adored great-grandchildren are Jennifer
23(Brandon) Sales, Emily and Dan Ashburn, Andrew (Kristyn)

1Antonio, Sara Antonio and Anna (Johnny) Hower, Melissa and A.J.
2Branton, Greta, Mercedes and Vicente Nagel, Karl and Jenna
3Nagel, and Austin and Bridget McGreevy; and his
4great-great-granddaughters are Tirzah Ashburn and Graelyn
5Antonio; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Karl Nagel, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
9friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Karl Nagel as an expression of our
12deepest sympathy.
