| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Frederic Kris Lehman of Champaign, who |
| 4 | | passed away on February 10, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman was born on February 5, 1924 in |
| 6 | | New York City; his parents were David Henry Lehman and Olga |
| 7 | | Isabel Lehman; he married Sheila Geyer on September 10, 1956 in |
| 8 | | New York; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, At the age of 3, Frederic Lehman went to live with |
| 10 | | the family of his father's cousin in Calcutta, India, where he |
| 11 | | remained until the age of 4; he later moved with his family to |
| 12 | | Lashio, Burma, where he apprenticed in the family gem trade at |
| 13 | | the age of 14; in 1940, he left Burma to visit his parents when |
| 14 | | he was caught up in World War II; he served mostly in the |
| 15 | | Merchant Navy and injured his back in a German attack on his |
| 16 | | convoy; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, After the war, Frederic Lehman took his high |
| 18 | | school equivalency at DeWitt Clinton High School before |
| 19 | | entering New York University, where he studied mathematics and |
| 20 | | theoretical physics and minored in languages and social |
| 21 | | sciences and graduated with honors in 1949; he later entered |
| 22 | | Columbia University and studied anthropology and linguistics, |

| 1 | | earning his Ph.D. in 1959 after returning from his first major |
| 2 | | field trip to the Chin Hills of Burma with his wife and son; |
| 3 | | and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman took his first academic |
| 5 | | appointment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, |
| 6 | | becoming an assistant professor in 1960-1961; he became a |
| 7 | | tenured associate professor in 1965 and a professor in 1968; he |
| 8 | | also conducted field research in Burma, Thailand, India, and |
| 9 | | China; he retired as an emeritus professor of anthropology, |
| 10 | | linguistics, and cognitive sciences in the spring of 2009; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, After his retirement, Frederic Lehman continued |
| 12 | | to collaborate with colleagues around the world and remained on |
| 13 | | the cutting edge of his interests, giving papers at |
| 14 | | conferences, writing, and publishing until two months before |
| 15 | | his passing; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman is survived by his wife, Sheila; |
| 17 | | his sons, Mark Alexander Lehman (Sandra Edwards) and Charles |
| 18 | | Frederic Albert Lehman; his grandchildren, Tamisha LaShawn |
| 19 | | McClendon, Brandon Alexander Lehman, and Cameron Alexander |
| 20 | | Lehman; his daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Lehman; and his |
| 21 | | favorite dog, Kai; therefore, be it
