SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Frederic Kris Lehman of Champaign, who
4passed away on February 10, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman was born on February 5, 1924 in
6New York City; his parents were David Henry Lehman and Olga
7Isabel Lehman; he married Sheila Geyer on September 10, 1956 in
8New York; and
 
9    WHEREAS, At the age of 3, Frederic Lehman went to live with
10the family of his father's cousin in Calcutta, India, where he
11remained until the age of 4; he later moved with his family to
12Lashio, Burma, where he apprenticed in the family gem trade at
13the age of 14; in 1940, he left Burma to visit his parents when
14he was caught up in World War II; he served mostly in the
15Merchant Navy and injured his back in a German attack on his
16convoy; and
 
17    WHEREAS, After the war, Frederic Lehman took his high
18school equivalency at DeWitt Clinton High School before
19entering New York University, where he studied mathematics and
20theoretical physics and minored in languages and social
21sciences and graduated with honors in 1949; he later entered
22Columbia University and studied anthropology and linguistics,

1earning his Ph.D. in 1959 after returning from his first major
2field trip to the Chin Hills of Burma with his wife and son;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman took his first academic
5appointment at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
6becoming an assistant professor in 1960-1961; he became a
7tenured associate professor in 1965 and a professor in 1968; he
8also conducted field research in Burma, Thailand, India, and
9China; he retired as an emeritus professor of anthropology,
10linguistics, and cognitive sciences in the spring of 2009; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After his retirement, Frederic Lehman continued
12to collaborate with colleagues around the world and remained on
13the cutting edge of his interests, giving papers at
14conferences, writing, and publishing until two months before
15his passing; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Frederic Lehman is survived by his wife, Sheila;
17his sons, Mark Alexander Lehman (Sandra Edwards) and Charles
18Frederic Albert Lehman; his grandchildren, Tamisha LaShawn
19McClendon, Brandon Alexander Lehman, and Cameron Alexander
20Lehman; his daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Lehman; and his
21favorite dog, Kai; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
2family and friends, mourn the passing of Frederic Kris Lehman;
3and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Frederic Lehman as an expression of
6our sympathy.
