| 2 | | WHEREAS, Stroke can occur before birth, in infants, |
| 3 | | children, and young adults; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, The risk of pediatric stroke is highest in the |
| 5 | | first year of life and peaks during the perinatal period; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Stroke occurs in the United States at a rate of |
| 7 | | from 1 in 1,600 to 1 in 4,000 live births each year, and in 12 |
| 8 | | in 100,000 children each year; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Between 50% and 85% of infants and children who |
| 10 | | have pediatric stroke will have serious permanent neurological |
| 11 | | disabilities, including paralysis, seizures, speech and vision |
| 12 | | problems, and attention, learning, and behavioral |
| 13 | | difficulties, and may require ongoing physical therapy and |
| 14 | | surgeries; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The lifelong care and treatments resulting from |
| 16 | | pediatric stroke result in a significant financial and |
| 17 | | emotional toll on the child, family, and society at large; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Little is known about the cause, treatment, and |
| 19 | | prevention of pediatric stroke; risk factors, symptoms, |
| 20 | | prevention efforts, and treatments are often different for |
