SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to 
3learn of the death of Michael "Mike" Flaherty, who passed away 
4on April 15, 2016; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty graduated from Alleman High 
6School and Augustana College, with an accounting degree; he 
7served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard 
8the USS Albany at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and in the Mediterranean 
9Sea; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty worked for numerous companies in 
11Iowa and Wisconsin; he managed plants for Miller Container  
12across Illinois, two computer companies in the Quad Cities, and 
13owned The Popcorn Company in SouthPark Mall; he closed his 
14career in Verona, Wisconsin working for Innocorp Limited; after 
15retiring, he worked part-time for Eriksen Chevrolet; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty's passion for nature and the 
17environment inspired him to complete a Master Naturalist 
18certification for Illinois; he was awarded Master Naturalist of 
19the Year in 2014; his volunteer work included an initiative to 
20create pathway signage at St. Mary Monastery in Rock Island; he 
21also became a Master Conservationist in Iowa; his work at 
22Nahant Marsh was instrumental in his experience of the natural

1world and he developed numerous new friends in the community; 
2he enjoyed backyard birdwatching, providing a variety of 
3feeders for different species; he filled the feeders at Black 
4Hawk State Historic Site throughout last winter and also those 
5of elderly friends; he enjoyed fishing and sharing his 
6extensive knowledge, especially with younger folks; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty was active in the Jaycees; he 
8enjoyed dressing up as Santa on Christmas Eve for his family; 
9and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty was preceded in death by his 
11parents, James and Doris Flaherty, and his brother, Robert 
12Michael; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Michael Flaherty is survived by his  wife of 47 
14years, Nancy Flaherty; his  son, Rob (Anne) Flaherty, and their 
15daughter, Bailey; his son, Tim "Sweet Pea" Flaherty; his 
16brothers, Tom (Nancy), Jay, John (Glenda), Bill (Ann), Dan 
17(Diane), Pat (Karen), and Brian (Mary); and numerous nieces and 
18nephews; therefore, be it
  
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL 
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of 
21Michael "Mike" Flaherty, and extend our sincere condolences to 
22his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
