SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Albert Denis McCoy, who passed away on
4March 26, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was born on June 25, 1926 in Aurora;
6his parents were Denis and Katherine McCoy; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade
8School and graduated from Marmion Academy with the Class of
91944; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was a combat veteran of World War II,
11serving as a signalman in the United States Navy aboard the
12aircraft carrier USS Monterey in the South Pacific; he
13participated in the Battle of Okinawa, the Japan main island
14campaigns, and was present with the 3rd Fleet in Tokyo Bay
15during the surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945; he received
165 Battle Stars for his service during World War II; and
 
17    WHEREAS, After the war, Albert McCoy returned to Aurora and
18attended Aurora University; he then received a football
19scholarship to the University of Montana in Missoula, where he
20also was a member of the baseball team; he remained active in
21sports his entire life and served as a college football referee

1for 21 years; after college, he returned home and served as the
2assistant controller of R & M Kaufmann in downtown Aurora,
3where he met his wife, Mary Ann; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In 1965, at the age of 38, Albert McCoy was
5elected to serve as Mayor of the City of Aurora; he served
6three terms as mayor from 1965 to 1977; during his tenure as
7mayor, Aurora annexed 6,800 acres of land which gave rise to
8Aurora's current distinction as the second largest city in
9Illinois; after leaving the office of mayor, he served as
10Chairman of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission from 1977 to
111998; he was also Vice President of the Old Second National
12Bank in Aurora for 14 years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was active in numerous local civic
14and charitable organizations during his life; he was a member
15of Holy Angels Parish for over 50 years and served as a lector
16for 28 years; he was a member of the Serra Club of Aurora for 25
17years; he was also a recipient of the Marmion Centurion Award
18and was the fourth recipient of the Marmion Ad Regnum Dei Award
19in recognition of exceptional public witness and service of
20Gospel values for the Kingdom of God; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy is survived by his son, Mike (Vicki)
22McCoy; his daughter, Cara (John) Gibbons; his grandchildren,
23Joe, Mark, and Kate McCoy and Elizabeth and Sarah Gibbons; and

1his many nieces and nephews; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was preceded in death by his wife,
3Mary Ann McCoy; his parents; his brother, Gerald (Betty) McCoy;
4and his sister, Alice (Clyde) Hess; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
7family and friends, mourn the passing of Albert Denis McCoy;
8and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Albert McCoy as an expression of our
11sympathy.
