2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Muriel Claire Kotchever Schnierow, who |
4 | | passed away on April 24, 2016; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Muriel was born on February 1, 1928 in Rogers |
6 | | Park; her parents were Saul and Estelle Kotchever; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Muriel attended Sullivan High School and the |
8 | | University of Wisconsin; she subsequently moved to Oak Park, |
9 | | where she spent 20 years as a successful real estate broker and |
10 | | was the first woman to sell commercial real estate in Oak Park; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Muriel was an accomplished singer and pianist; she |
13 | | sang with the Oak Park River Forest Symphony Chorus in |
14 | | cathedrals all over Europe and worked with the Nineteenth |
15 | | Century Club, involving herself in their music program as well |
16 | | as mentoring many young aspiring musicians; she was also a |
17 | | member of and donor to Unity Church; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, Later in her life, Muriel became a political |
19 | | activist and consultant with the progressive faction of the |
20 | | Democratic Party; she was called a "key supporter" of New York |
21 | | Senator, Charles Schumer's successful 2006 campaign and worked |

1 | | tirelessly on the presidential campaigns of President Barack |
2 | | Obama in 2008 and 2012; she most recently became an |
3 | | enthusiastic supporter of the presidential campaign of Senator |
4 | | Bernie Sanders; she also lobbied Vice President Joe Biden and |
5 | | other Democrats to focus their time and energy on legislation |
6 | | to combat domestic violence, child abuse, and protecting the |
7 | | most vulnerable; she was known as fearless, persuasive, and |
8 | | passionate about her causes and tried to build coalitions and |
9 | | grow partnerships in support of change; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, During her final illness, Muriel was a generous |
11 | | donor to charities and political organizations like Amnesty |
12 | | International and MoveOn.org; she left a posthumous donation to |
13 | | the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, |
15 | | Gerson; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Muriel is survived by her daughter Nancy; her son, |
17 | | Neil; her stepdaughters, Laurie and Beth; her daughter-in-law, |
18 | | Karen; her two grandchildren, Dean and Niko; and her cousin, |
19 | | Gloria; therefore, be it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her |
22 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Muriel Claire |
