SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mary Lee Gray, at the age of 79; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Mary Gray was born in Denmark, Tennessee to Lonnie
5and Mellie Gray on September 19, 1937; she attended Upper
6Ingram and South Jackson Elementary School; she graduated from
7Merry Jackson High School and earned her Bachelor of Science
8from Lane Teachers College, where she played basketball; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Mary Gray relocated to Chicago and began her
10teaching career with the Chicago Public School District, where
11she served for 35 years, retiring in 1998; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Mary Gray was affectionately know as "MayLee" by
13her parents and as "Bubba" by her grandchildren; she enjoyed
14singing, traveling, and watching professional basketball; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Mary Gray was preceded in death by her parents;
16her brothers, Willie B. Gray, Wayne George Gray, and Sammie Lee
17Gray; and her sisters, Georgia Ruth Gray-Polk, Alfonsa
18Hunt-Lewis, Vernice Rufus, and Marjorie (Dan) Hurt; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Mary Gray is survived by her children, Nikita
20Powell, Sandra Powell, Dr. Anitrese Wilks, and Dr. Latonya

1(Anthony) Wilks-Daniels; her goddaughter, Robin Henry; her
2grandchildren, Laron Holt, Curtis Mason, Lakita Scott, and
3Jaylen Jordan; her great-grandchildren, Christian Holt, Lamyra
4Scott, Aubrey Mason, and Alex Mason; her sisters, Margaret
5(Michael) Dean, Forrestine Gray, Shirley (Leland) Willis, and
6Claudette Osborne; her brothers, Lonnie (Margaret) Gray Jr.,
7Daniel (Diane) Gray, James Gray, and James "Duke" Hunt; her
8stepmother, Millie Gray; and a host of nieces, nephews,
9cousins, and in-laws; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Mary Lee Gray, and extend our sincere condolences to her
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Mary Gray as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
