| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
| ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Louis B. Garippo of Glenview, who
passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on May 31, 2016; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Louis Garippo was born in Chicago and grew up in | ||||||
| 6 | the Galewood neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side; he | ||||||
| 7 | attended Fenwick
High School, the University of Notre Dame, and | ||||||
| 8 | DePaul University
Law School; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Louis Garippo served two years in the United | ||||||
| 10 | States Army before
he followed in the footsteps of his | ||||||
| 11 | grandfather, Benjamin
Adamowski, and joined the Cook County | ||||||
| 12 | State's Attorney's Office
in 1958 as an Assistant State's | ||||||
| 13 | Attorney; he handled
high-profile cases such as the 1960 | ||||||
| 14 | Summerdale police scandal
and the Guido-Yonder torture and | ||||||
| 15 | burglary case in 1962; two
years after he became Chief of the | ||||||
| 16 | Criminal Division in 1964,
he was named First Assistant State's | ||||||
| 17 | Attorney and was
assigned to assist in other high-profile | ||||||
| 18 | cases, including the trial of Richard Speck; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Louis Garippo became a Cook County Circuit Court | ||||||
| 20 | judge in
1968; in 1970, he set precedent by ruling State laws | ||||||
| 21 | allowing
subpoenas for journalists and their notes as | ||||||
| 22 | unconstitutional;
he also presided over the 1980 trial of John | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Wayne Gacy; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, After 12 years as a judge,
following the Gacy | ||||||
| 3 | trial, Louis Garippo entered into private practice, where he | ||||||
| 4 | was still
involved in high-profile issues; he provided legal | ||||||
| 5 | counsel
for Chicago Teamsters' leader, Daniel Ligurotis, who in | ||||||
| 6 | 1992 was acquitted of fatally shooting his son; he was
selected | ||||||
| 7 | in 2000 to research public opinion concerning the
retention of | ||||||
| 8 | Chief Illiniwek as a
mascot for the University of Illinois; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Louis Garippo received numerous awards and | ||||||
| 10 | recognitions for
his integrity and prudence, including the | ||||||
| 11 | Justice Leadership Award from Treatment Alternatives for Safe | ||||||
| 12 | Communities and the Accipiter Award from Fenwick High School; | ||||||
| 13 | he earned the highest rating
of any trial judge in surveys | ||||||
| 14 | administered by the Chicago Bar
Association; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Louis Garippo is survived by his wife, Colette; | ||||||
| 16 | his
daughters, Ellen and Mary; his son, Tom; his five | ||||||
| 17 | grandchildren;
and his sister, Anna Maria Sciaraffa; | ||||||
| 18 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 21 | Louis B. Garippo, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
| 22 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||

| 2 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
