|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Daniel M. Schmitt of Johnsburg, who |
| 4 | | passed away on October 22, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was born on September 2, 1923 in |
| 6 | | Johnsburg; his parents were Joseph and Mary Schmitt; he married |
| 7 | | Betty Ann Hecht on September 15, 1951; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt attended St. John the Baptist Grade |
| 9 | | School and McHenry Community High School, where he graduated in |
| 10 | | 1941; after graduating from high school, he worked as a |
| 11 | | chemical operator at the Ringwood Chemical Corporation until he |
| 12 | | was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1943; after |
| 13 | | completing basic training and before being sent overseas, he |
| 14 | | studied one semester at the University of Illinois at |
| 15 | | Chicago-Navy Pier and a second semester at New York University; |
| 16 | | in 1944, he was deployed as a medic in the European Theater of |
| 17 | | Operations and served in that capacity until the end of the |
| 18 | | war; he remained in Germany for almost a year overseeing the |
| 19 | | operations of a military hospital in Regensburg, Germany; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, After returning to the United States, Daniel |
| 21 | | Schmitt enrolled at the University of Illinois in |
| 22 | | Champaign-Urbana, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in |
|

| 1 | | Chemical Engineering in February of 1951; during college, he |
| 2 | | was inducted into the Honorary Chemical Society of Phi Lambda |
| 3 | | Upsilon; after graduation, he returned to the Ringwood Chemical |
| 4 | | Corporation and worked as a chemical engineer; in 1958, he |
| 5 | | achieved one of his life goals by becoming the plant manager of |
| 6 | | what is now a Morton Chemical Company facility; while serving |
| 7 | | as plant manager, he introduced and implemented innovative |
| 8 | | methods in quality assurance and quality improvement; in 1988, |
| 9 | | he was promoted to a corporate management position, where he |
| 10 | | could apply his strategies company-wide; he retired in 1992 to |
| 11 | | pursue more leisurely activities, especially golf; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was a very active member of his |
| 13 | | community; he was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist |
| 14 | | Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council and as a |
| 15 | | Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, and an Usher; he was a founding |
| 16 | | member of the St. John the Baptist Building/Improvement Fund; |
| 17 | | he was a long-serving member of the Northern Illinois Medical |
| 18 | | Center Board of Directors and served as treasurer of the |
| 19 | | Northern Illinois Medical Center Foundation Board, where he was |
| 20 | | vital to the planning and construction of a new hospital in |
| 21 | | 1983; he was a Trustee of the McHenry Township Fire Protection |
| 22 | | District and a member of the McHenry County Manufacturers |
| 23 | | Association; he was a lifetime member and officer of Veterans |
| 24 | | of Foreign Wars Post 4600, Johnsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars |
| 25 | | Post 11496, American Legion Post 491, and the Knights of |
|

| 1 | | Columbus Council 1288 of the Bishop Boylan Assembly; he was |
| 2 | | also a volunteer leader for Boy Scout Troop 162 of McHenry and |
| 3 | | a volunteer GED teacher at McHenry Community College; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was preceded in death by his wife, |
| 5 | | Betty; his parents; and his brothers, Roman, Paul, and Raymond; |
| 6 | | and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt is survived by his son, Dr. Gregory |
| 8 | | S. (Jane L.) Schmitt; his daughter, Nancy Carol Schmitt; his |
| 9 | | grandchildren, David and Michael; and his brother, Donald; |
| 10 | | therefore, be it
|
| 11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL |
| 12 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
| 13 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Daniel M. Schmitt; and |
| 14 | | be it further
|
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 16 | | presented to the family of Daniel Schmitt as an expression of |
| 17 | | our sympathy.
