SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Daniel M. Schmitt of Johnsburg, who
4passed away on October 22, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was born on September 2, 1923 in
6Johnsburg; his parents were Joseph and Mary Schmitt; he married
7Betty Ann Hecht on September 15, 1951; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt attended St. John the Baptist Grade
9School and McHenry Community High School, where he graduated in
101941; after graduating from high school, he worked as a
11chemical operator at the Ringwood Chemical Corporation until he
12was drafted into the United States Army in June of 1943; after
13completing basic training and before being sent overseas, he
14studied one semester at the University of Illinois at
15Chicago-Navy Pier and a second semester at New York University;
16in 1944, he was deployed as a medic in the European Theater of
17Operations and served in that capacity until the end of the
18war; he remained in Germany for almost a year overseeing the
19operations of a military hospital in Regensburg, Germany; and
 
20    WHEREAS, After returning to the United States, Daniel
21Schmitt enrolled at the University of Illinois in
22Champaign-Urbana, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in

1Chemical Engineering in February of 1951; during college, he
2was inducted into the Honorary Chemical Society of Phi Lambda
3Upsilon; after graduation, he returned to the Ringwood Chemical
4Corporation and worked as a chemical engineer; in 1958, he
5achieved one of his life goals by becoming the plant manager of
6what is now a Morton Chemical Company facility; while serving
7as plant manager, he introduced and implemented innovative
8methods in quality assurance and quality improvement; in 1988,
9he was promoted to a corporate management position, where he
10could apply his strategies company-wide; he retired in 1992 to
11pursue more leisurely activities, especially golf; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was a very active member of his
13community; he was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist
14Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council and as a
15Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, and an Usher; he was a founding
16member of the St. John the Baptist Building/Improvement Fund;
17he was a long-serving member of the Northern Illinois Medical
18Center Board of Directors and served as treasurer of the
19Northern Illinois Medical Center Foundation Board, where he was
20vital to the planning and construction of a new hospital in
211983; he was a Trustee of the McHenry Township Fire Protection
22District and a member of the McHenry County Manufacturers
23Association; he was a lifetime member and officer of Veterans
24of Foreign Wars Post 4600, Johnsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars
25Post 11496, American Legion Post 491, and the Knights of

1Columbus Council 1288 of the Bishop Boylan Assembly; he was
2also a volunteer leader for Boy Scout Troop 162 of McHenry and
3a volunteer GED teacher at McHenry Community College; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt was preceded in death by his wife,
5Betty; his parents; and his brothers, Roman, Paul, and Raymond;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Daniel Schmitt is survived by his son, Dr. Gregory
8S. (Jane L.) Schmitt; his daughter, Nancy Carol Schmitt; his
9grandchildren, David and Michael; and his brother, Donald;
10therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his
13family and friends, mourn the passing of Daniel M. Schmitt; and
14be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Daniel Schmitt as an expression of
17our sympathy.
