RESOLUTION
The following resolutions were offered and placed in the

HOUSE RESOLUTION 210
Offered by Representative Giglio:
WHEREAS, The members of this Body were saddened to learn of the
death of William J. Asselborn, Jr., Mayor of the Village of Glenwood,
on Wednesday, April 7, 1999; and
WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago on March 26, 1939; he graduated
from Mt. Carmel High School and subsequently received his Basic and
General Certificates from the American Institute of Banking; he
completed graduate and postgraduate courses at the Wisconsin Graduate
School of Banking; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Asselborn was a senior vice president at Highland
Community Bank in Chicago since 1997; before that, he was the
president and chief executive officer at Ashland State Bank in
Chicago, having joined the bank in 1963; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Asselborn was beginning his third year of his second
term as Mayor; he served three terms as a Glenwood Trustee from
1980-1993; while Trustee, he was a member of the Village's planning
commission in 1979-1980 and was a member of the Glenwood School
District 167 Board from 1978-1980; and
WHEREAS, He was elected president of the South Suburban Mayors
and Managers Association in May of 1998 and was a member of the
Illinois Bankers Association's Federal Legislative Committee; and
WHEREAS, He was a member of the Sertoma Club, the Chicago Heights
Country Club, and the Illinois National Guard at the 47th Street and
Cottage Grove Avenue Armory in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Asselborn's dedication was instrumental in bring
economic development to the area that included the Village purchasing
the renowned Glenwoodie Golf Course; the new Village Hall/Police
Station complex construction has begun; and Mr. Asselborn was an
advocate of bringing the third airport to the Chicago Southland Area;
and
WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family and

friends, especially his wife, Joyce; his children, William, Donald,

WHEREAS, He retired in 1987 as president of the Profit Sharing
Council of America; he testified often before the House Ways and
Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee, and lobbied
successfully for 401(k) provisions in the U.S. Tax Code; and
WHEREAS, More recently, he served as vice president of the
Hegewisch Airport Opponents and was actively involved with the

Illinois, who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mildred Petty Coleman was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas,
on January 27, 1908; her parents were Otha Petty and Mattie Harper
Petty; she was raised by her grandmother, Biddie Harper, with the
help of her aunt, Irola Harper Parish, and her husband, Reverend
Andrew J. Parish, Sr., after being orphaned at an early age; and
WHEREAS, Mildred Coleman accepted Jesus Christ at an early age,
received baptism, and joined with the Church of Christ (Holiness)
U.S.A. in Pine Bluff, Arkansas; she received her education in Pine
Bluff and attended the Arkansas Normal College trade school; and
WHEREAS, She was married to Leroy Coleman, Sr., on March 29,
1933; together they had seven children, and in 1983 they celebrated
their golden wedding anniversary; Mr. Coleman passed away in 1989;
and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Coleman raised her children with biblical scripture
as her format; she supported the needy and the elderly, setting an
example of her Christian walk; together she worked with her husband
many years in the operation of the family's service station; and
WHEREAS, Mildred Coleman is survived by her children, Gladys
Dennis (Richard), Mary Lee Coleman, Biddie C. Brown, Jennett
Alexander (David Sr.), Ella Washington (Harold), Sarah Mutua (Jerry),

sports, eating, and having a good time around his loved ones; and
