HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to truly great individuals; and
 
4    WHEREAS, General Wladyslaw Anders was born in 1892 in a
5small town just west of Warsaw in what would one day become the
6country of Poland; he joined the newly formed Polish military
7in 1918, attaining the rank of General in 1934; and
 
8    WHEREAS, At the start of World War II, General Anders
9fought with the Polish Army; he was captured by the Soviets and
10forced into the USSR Army to fight against the Nazis; he
11escaped and formed the Polish 2nd Corps of the Polish Armed
12Forces in exile; he fought for the liberation of Italy, leading
13the successful campaign to free Monte Cassino in May of 1944;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, After the war, General Anders remained in England
16with the Polish Army in exile, advocating for a free and
17democratic Poland, which had become a satellite state of the
18USSR; and
 
19    WHEREAS, General Anders passed away in 1970 and his body
20lay in state in London; and

1    WHEREAS, General Anders was later laid to rest alongside
2the thousands of fallen soldiers from "Anders' Army" at the
3Polish War Cemetery in Monte Cassino, Italy; many of those who
4fought with him now lie in rest at Maryhill Cemetery in Niles;
5therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE
8CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of Milwaukee
9Avenue in Niles, as it runs from Main Street to Dempster Street
10as "General Wladyslaw Anders Memorial Way"; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
12is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
13State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
14giving notice of the name "General Wladyslaw Anders Memorial
15Way"; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
17presented to the family of General Anders, Niles Mayor Andrew
18Przybylo, and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
19Transportation.
