2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Hiles Stout of Peoria, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | October 31, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was born in Peoria to Gale and Mildred | ||||||
6 | Stout on May 10, 1935; he graduated from Peoria High School in | ||||||
7 | 1953, where he established records in football, basketball, and | ||||||
8 | baseball; he was a standout quarterback and a tough and rugged | ||||||
9 | center in basketball, leading Peoria High School to a second | ||||||
10 | place finish in the 1953 single-class state tournament; at one | ||||||
11 | time, his 1,546 career basketball points and single-game high | ||||||
12 | of 48, were records for all local prep players; he was also a | ||||||
13 | power-hitting first baseman; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout had many athletic scholarship offers; | ||||||
15 | he chose the University of Illinois over Michigan, Notre Dame, | ||||||
16 | Miami, Georgia, and Kansas; he went on to become a two-sport | ||||||
17 | star for Illinois in both football and basketball, earning | ||||||
18 | three football letters and three basketball letters; he also | ||||||
19 | played baseball for two years; following graduation, he had | ||||||
20 | interest from professional football teams and was offered a | ||||||
21 | tryout by the Cleveland Browns; and | ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout married Marcia Kittilsen in 1960; and

1 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout returned to Peoria and worked as a | ||||||
2 | sales representative for Caterpillar, Inc.; he then went on to | ||||||
3 | serve several years in the United States Marine Corps; he | ||||||
4 | returned to Peoria after completing his military service, and | ||||||
5 | in the early 1960s accepted an offer to form an insurance | ||||||
6 | agency partnership; he owned the Hecht-Stout Insurance Agency | ||||||
7 | for many years; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was inducted into the Greater Peoria | ||||||
9 | Sports Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches | ||||||
10 | Association Hall of Fame; he enjoyed handball, tennis, and | ||||||
11 | running, completing three marathons; he loved spending the | ||||||
12 | winter months in Marco Island, Florida and spent countless | ||||||
13 | hours watching his grandkids participate in youth, high school, | ||||||
14 | and college sports; he co-founded the St. Jude Tennis Classic; | ||||||
15 | he was a successful fundraiser for the St. Jude Midwest | ||||||
16 | Affiliate, chairing the event for 26 years and raising more | ||||||
17 | than $1 million; he attended Grace Presbyterian Church for 50 | ||||||
18 | years; and

19 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout was preceded in death by his wife, | ||||||
20 | Marcia; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Hiles Stout is survived by his children, Wade | ||||||
22 | Stout, Sally (Steve) Ferlmann, and Susie (Jeff) Sorenson, and |

1 | his grandchildren, Melissa, Claire, Jessica, Peter, Katie, | ||||||
2 | Wyatt, Alex, Michael, Ellie, and John; therefore, be it
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
4 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
5 | Hiles Stout, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | ||||||
6 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to the family of Hiles Stout as an expression of our | ||||||
9 | deepest sympathy.
