SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Augustine Martel of Silvis, who passed
4away on February 6, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was born in East Moline to
6Augustine and Helen Martel on September 20, 1935; he was a high
7school basketball star at Moline High School and received an
8athletic scholarship which allowed him to earn his bachelor's
9degree from the University of Iowa, where he studied art; he
10was a member of Iowa's 1954-1955 and 1955-1956 Final Four
11basketball teams; he served in the United States Army during
12the Korean War and married Mary Boyles in Rock Island in 1956;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, Augustine Martel worked for Deere and Company
15until his retirement in 1997; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was an avid reader of
17biographies, history, and nonfiction books, and enjoyed
18discussing them daily over coffee at home or out with friends;
19he was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Augustine Martel was preceded in death by his
21parents; and

1    WHEREAS, Augustine Martel is survived by his wife, Mary;
2his children, Greg Martel, Ted (Margie) Martel, Steph (Dan)
3Kopatich, and Stacie (Bob) Smith; his grandchildren, Frances
4Martel, Alexander Martel, Katelyn Kopatich, and Allison
5Kopatich; and his siblings, Dorothy Sotello, Frank (Bonnie)
6Martel, Don (Nancy) Martel, Dick (Frances) Martel, Patty
7(Harold) Hill, Larry Martel, and David Martel; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Augustine Martel, and extend our sincere condolences to his
11family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Augustine Martel as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
