SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Rolyn W. "Ron" Olson of Rock Island, who
4passed away on January 31, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson was born in Monmouth to Samuel and
6Hattie Harris Olson on June 24, 1928; he grew up on a farm
7between Joy and New Boston and attended Joy High School,
8graduating in 1946; as a young man, he worked on his parents'
9and grandparents' farms; during the Korean War, he served with
10the United States Navy Seabees, constructing the Subic Bay
11Naval Base in the South Pacific Theater; he married Mary
12Gustafson on April 10, 1949; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson worked as a millwright and welder on
14construction jobs all over the Midwest; and
 
15    WHEREAS, After retiring in 1990, Rolyn Olson enjoyed
16restoring and showing antique tractors and won numerous
17trophies; he spent many hours working in his shop at home; he
18was very proud of his Swedish heritage and enjoyed studying the
19family genealogy; he was a member of the International
20Harvester Collectors Club, the Midwest Old Threshers, and the
21Edwards River Antique Engine Club; and

1    WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson was a member of the Seabee Reserves,
2the Navy Seabee Veterans of America, the American Legion, the
3Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Rifle Association, and
4the Vikings; he was a 60-plus-year member of Millwright Local
5Union No. 2158; he served his union as Board Member, Treasurer,
6Negotiator, and Apprentice Instructor; in 1964, he was on the
7committee negotiating the first insurance and pension benefits
8for Local 2158; he was also Treasurer of the Millwright
9Retirees Club; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson is survived by his wife of 67 years,
11Mary; his son, David (Heidi) Olson; his daughter, Margaret
12Rosanne Moreland; five grandchildren; and three
13great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Rolyn W. "Ron" Olson, and extend our sincere condolences to his
17family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Rolyn Olson as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
