SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington,
3D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed more than 58,000
4servicemen and women who had either died in action or went
5missing during the Vietnam War; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Due to a fire at government storage facility in
71973, the United States military lost millions of personnel
8records, including many of those who were listed on the wall;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, The military and other organizations made efforts
11to recover the lost data; 24,000 veterans listed on the wall
12still had no picture in military records as of 2013; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In January of 2017, the Illinois Press Association
14Foundation joined the National Newspaper Association in
15coordinated effort to recover the 579 missing Illinois
16veterans' photos; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois newspapers have worked with their
18communities to locate 100 of the missing photos; 45 counties in
19Illinois are home to the remaining 479 soldiers without photos;
20therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge Illinois
3communities to become involved in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
4Foundation's "Wall of Faces" project to help locate pictures of
5soldiers whose photos were lost and to further preserve the
6legacy of those who sacrificed all in the Vietnam War.
