SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of George Marek of Johnsburg, who passed
4away on August 13, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Marek was born in Cicero to George E. and
6Albina (Huml) Marek on August 11, 1922; and
 
7    WHEREAS, George Marek served in the United States Military
8on the beaches of Normandy and in the infamous Battle of the
9Bulge; he also served courageously as a sergeant at the Battle
10of Ardennes, the Battle of Rhineland, the Battle of Central
11Europe, and with the air offensive in Europe; he received
12numerous medals, including the European-African-Middle Eastern
13Campaign Medal with one Silver Battle Star; he was one of only
14100 soldiers to receive the coveted Belgian Fourragere and
15received a commendation from the president of France; he
16married Edwina "Mary" Sayers, an officer in the Royal Air
17Force, in England on April 23, 1945; and
 
18    WHEREAS, George Marek returned to Cicero and resumed his
19apprenticeship as an electrician; he was a valued employee at
20Western Electric for 41 years; and
 
21    WHEREAS, George Marek had a wonderful sense of humor and a

1memorable Elvis impersonation; he was an avid fan of the
2Chicago Cubs, Bears, and Blackhawks and was honored as a World
3War II veteran at the last home playoff game when the
4Blackhawks won the 2013 Stanley Cup; and
 
5    WHEREAS, George Marek was preceded in death by his parents;
6his wife, Edwina; his brother, Robert Marek; his son, William
7Marek; and his grandsons, Ryan William and Ryan Christopher
8Wangall; and
 
9    WHEREAS, George Marek is survived by his daughter, Susan
10(Michael) Mlynski; his daughter-in-law, Rosemary Marek; his
11grandchildren, Jefferey Wangall, Brent Wangall, Bryan (Kelly)
12Wangall, Kevin Wangall, David (Cheryl) Wangall, Mark (Sandy)
13Wangall, Melissa Wangall (Eric Hoffman), Megan (Dan)
14Salvatore, Jared Marek (Sara Commo), William Marek, Robert
15Marek, and Michael Marek; his great-grandchildren, Ryan,
16Kayla, Victoria, Bryan Jr., Isabel, Max, Charlotte, Johnny,
17Chloe, Ruby, Ella, Jakob, Lukas, Aggie, and Edgar; and his
18great-great grandchild, Aerabella; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21George Marek, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
22friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
