SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. of
4Moline, who passed away on June 17, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was born in Escanaba, Michigan to
6Herbert A. and Caroline Johnson Sundelius on July 6, 1930; he
7graduated Magna cum Laude from Augustana College in 1952; upon
8graduation from Augustana, he received a Fulbright Fellowship,
9which enabled him to pursue graduate studies at the University
10of Oslo in Norway; once he returned, he was drafted into the
11United States Army and served in Japan and Korea from 1953
12until 1955; after completing his military service, he resumed
13his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, where he
14earned his master of science and Ph.D.; he was also awarded the
15C.K. Keith Fellowship and was named a University Fellow; he
16married Charlene Swanson on May 21, 1955; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius joined the U.S. Geological
18Survey and served in military geology and Eastern U.S. regional
19geology from 1959 until 1965; he then joined the faculty of
20Wittenberg University in Ohio, where he became an associate
21dean, professor, and chair of geology; in 1957, he returned to
22Augustana as a professor of geology, vice president and dean;
23he retired as professor emeritus of geology in 1995; and

1    WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was a fellow in the Geological
2Society of America and held many other professional
3memberships, including the Society of Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa,
4Omicron Delta Kappa, the Society of Economic Geologists, and
5the Rotary Club of Rock Island; he was proud of his Swedish
6heritage and served as President of the Augustana Historical
7Society; he was a member of the American Scandinavian
8Association at Augustana College and served on the board of the
9Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center; for his
10leadership in academics and the promotion of ties between the
11United States and Sweden, he was accorded the rank of Knight in
12the Royal Order of the North Star (Kungliga Nordstjarneorden)
13by his Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in 1996; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was preceded in death by his
15wife, Charlene; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius is survived by his daughters,
17Karen (Gary Risch) Sundelius and Kristine (Brad) Lundine; his
18grandchildren, Andrew (Cassie) and Matthew Pappas, and Sarah,
19Anna, Elizabeth, and Mark Lundine; his great-grandson, Drew
20Pappas; and his sister, Lorian Sundelius Swanson; therefore, be

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. and extend our sincere
3condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
4him; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Harold Sundelius as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
