SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

625 ILCS 5/3-609.1  from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-609.1
625 ILCS 5/3-609.3 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, in lieu of receiving registration plates without payment of a fee under the Section authorizing issuance of plates for veterans with disabilities, any veteran who holds proof of a 50% or greater service-connected disability from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs may apply for a military series registration plate in the manner prescribed by the Secretary of State. Provides that, upon the veteran showing proof of the disability, a military series registration plate may be issued to the veteran without fee for the registration of one motor vehicle of the first division or one motor vehicle of the second division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. In the Section concerning Medal of Honor plates, changes "Congressional Medal of Honor" to "Medal of Honor".

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing
5Section 3-609.1 and by adding Sections 1-142.3 and 3-609.3 as
6follows:
 
7    (625 ILCS 5/1-142.3 new)
8    Sec. 1-142.3. Military series registration plate. Any
9registration plate that may only be issued to an applicant
10based on some aspect of the applicant's military service.
 
11    (625 ILCS 5/3-609.1)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3-609.1)
12    Sec. 3-609.1. Congressional Medal of Honor plates. Any
13resident of the State of Illinois who has been awarded the
14Congressional Medal of Honor, or an Illinois resident who is
15the surviving spouse of a person who was awarded the Medal of
16Honor, may make application for the registration of a motor
17vehicle owned solely or in part by such recipient, to the
18Secretary of State without the payment of any registration fee.
19Registration shall be for a multi-year period effective from
20issuance. The Secretary of State shall furnish at his or her
21office at no cost to such Congressional Medal of Honor
22recipients, plates bearing up to 3 letters designating the

1recipient's initials followed by the letters M O H C M H
2signifying the Congressional Medal of Honor. The plate shall be
3suitable for attachment to a motor vehicle or motorcycle
4registered under this Code.
