SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/14.8 new

    Amends the Environmental Protection Act. Requires that the Agency define "microplastics" and examine the role of microplastics in public drinking water. Requires the Agency to publicly disclose the results of its testing and reporting. Provides that the Agency, if appropriate, is to consider issuing a notification level to aid consumer interpretations. Requires the Agency to accredit qualified laboratories in Illinois to analyze microplastics.

1    AN ACT concerning safety.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
514.8 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/14.8 new)
7    Sec. 14.8. Microplastics.
8    (a) The Agency, on or before July 1, 2020, shall adopt a
9definition of microplastics in drinking water.
10    (b) The Agency, on or before July 1, 2021, shall perform
11each of the following:
12        (1) adopt a standard methodology to be used in the
13    testing of drinking water for microplastics;
14        (2) adopt requirements for 4 years of testing and
15    reporting of microplastics in drinking water, including
16    public disclosure of those results;
17        (3) if appropriate, consider issuing a notification
18    level or other guidance to aid consumer interpretations of
19    the results of the testing required pursuant to this
20    Section; and
21        (4) accredit qualified laboratories in Illinois to
22    analyze microplastics.
