SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2805/2.14 new

    Amends the Department of Veterans' Affairs Act. Requires the Department of Veterans' Affairs to create a mental health pilot program to provide supportive services to active duty service members, veterans, and their families. Contains requirements for the pilot program. Requires the Department to provide follow-up interviews with families who participate in the pilot program to determine the effectiveness of services and classes offered under the pilot program. Provides that the Department may adopt any rules necessary to implement the pilot program.

1    AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Department of Veterans' Affairs Act is
5amended by adding Section 2.14 as follows:
 
6    (20 ILCS 2805/2.14 new)
7    Sec. 2.14. Mental health pilot program. The Department
8shall create a mental health pilot program to provide
9supportive services to active duty service members, veterans,
10and their families. The pilot program shall offer informational
11services and counseling to families on how best to support
12service members during their deployment and upon their reentry
13to civilian life. The pilot program shall also provide a
14general education course to family members on how to help
15service members and veterans adjust to the physical and mental
16challenges they might face after returning home from active
17duty. The Department shall provide follow-up interviews with
18families who participate in the pilot program to determine the
19effectiveness of services and classes offered under the pilot
20program. The Department may adopt any rules necessary to
21implement the pilot program.
