Amends the School Code to require a high school to include in its curriculum a unit of instruction about the process of naturalization by which a foreign citizen or foreign national becomes a U.S. citizen. Provides that the course of instruction shall include content from the components of the naturalization test administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Provides that each school board shall determine the minimum amount of instructional time required. Effective immediately.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 27-23.15 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-23.15 new) |
7 | | Sec. 27-23.15. Study of the process of naturalization. |
8 | | Every public high school shall include in its curriculum a unit |
9 | | of instruction about the process of naturalization by which a |
10 | | foreign citizen or foreign national becomes a U.S. citizen. The |
11 | | course of instruction shall include content from the components |
12 | | of the naturalization test administered by the U.S. Citizenship |
13 | | and Immigration Services. Each school board shall determine the |
14 | | minimum amount of instructional time required under this |
15 | | Section.

16 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
17 | | becoming law.
