HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 49

 
2    WHEREAS, The Sisters of the Resurrection were originally
3founded by four Polish women in Rome, Italy in 1891; they
4arrived in Chicago in 1900, where the Sisters dedicated
5themselves to serving all who were in need, wherever they were
6to be found, especially in Northwest Chicago; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Led by faith, Sister Ann Strzelecka purchased land
8in 1912; it is now home to both Resurrection High School and
9Resurrection Medical Center; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In the decades to come, the Sisters of the
11Resurrection provided extraordinary outreach, education,
12medical care, and a steadfast, supportive presence to the
13vulnerable communities throughout the neighborhoods in
14Northwest Chicago; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Sisters of the Resurrection highlight and
16model for others what it means to give one's self to a life of
17service; in their daily life of prayer, community work, and
18ongoing education, the Sisters also give witness to a life of
19servant leadership; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Continuing the tradition of their founding Polish
21pioneers, the Sisters model selflessness, generosity, and

1community values; these faith-filled Catholic women continue
2to inspire others to answer the call of serving others; their
3focus on listening and responding to the needs of their
4communities continues to inspire others to enter care-giving
5professions, especially healthcare and education; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Many of the Sisters of the Resurrection continue
7to live in the community of Northwest Chicago and support
8community efforts in their daily work and prophetic witness;
9their support of the recent restoration of the chapel at
10Resurrection Medical Center will provide a space for
11reflection, prayer, and peace for generations to come; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Sisters of the Resurrection health care
13ministry has brought healing and hope to thousands of their
14neighbors, with the Sisters persevering and overcoming
15adversity with tremendous faith, leadership and tenacity in
16order to provide care and dignity to all those in need;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare April 22, 2019
21Sisters of Resurrection Day in Illinois to honor their legacy,
22mission, and commitment to providing critical healthcare and
23high-quality education to the vulnerable populations in
