HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease most
3commonly affecting people of all ages and races worldwide;
4studies have shown that sarcoidosis affects young adults of
5both sexes, with more cases in females; the disease occurs at a
6higher rate among African Americans and people of European
7descent; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Many people with sarcoidosis experience
9nonspecific symptoms of fever, fatigue, weight loss, night
10sweats, and an overall feeling of malaise; these symptoms most
11often result in the disease going untreated; the disease most
12commonly targets the lungs and lymph nodes but may occur in the
13eyes, skin, or any other area of the body; it causes the immune
14system to attack the body's own tissues; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Although prevalence rates for sarcoidosis can
16only be estimated, the estimated prevalence rates in the United
17States range from one to 40 per 100,000 people; and
 
18    WHEREAS, While progress has been made in understanding
19sarcoidosis, the cause is unknown, and it is likely that there
20may be more than one cause; there is currently no cure for
21sarcoidosis; and

1    WHEREAS, Through increased research and improving
2treatments, finding a cure for this disease may be possible;
3therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we declare April 2019 as "Sarcoidosis Awareness Month" in the
7State of Illinois to encourage the citizens of our State to
8gain a greater understanding of the disease and to encourage
9the funding of research programs to find a cure; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the Foundation For Sarcoidosis Research in
13Chicago.
