HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mildred
4J. Wiley of Chicago, who passed away on March 26, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley graduated from Providence St. Mel
6High School; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley's life of service was grounded in
8her love of community, her faith, her belief in her fellow
9humans, and the hope and determination to improve the life
10chances of children and families; she had served on the Greater
11West Town Community Development Project's (GWTP) Board since
122013; her leadership role on the board was one of many
13commitments she made to the people of Chicago and to the
14residents of the West Side in particular; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Over the years, Mildred Wiley was involved in
16public education, job training and employment opportunities,
17lifting up the formerly incarcerated, promoting community
18revitalization and economic development, preventing violence,
19and creating safe spaces and places and greater educational
20opportunities for youth; she was a champion of GWTP's West Town
21Academy and the Shipping & Receiving and Woodworking Vocational
22Skills Training Program; she often attended graduation

1ceremonies at the Academy and Skills Training programs; she was
2active on the local and national levels, serving on elementary
3and high school local school councils and working with networks
4of education reformers and social and economic justice
5advocates across the country; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley believed in being hopeful and
7positive; she never gave up on trying to solve the most
8challenging and stubborn problems facing the community and took
9on each challenge with a quiet dignity, ferocious passion, and
10dogged determination; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Mildred Wiley is survived by her husband, Houston;
12her children, Corey and Colby; and her grandson, Joseph
13Robinson; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn the passing of Mildred J. Wiley and extend our sincere
17condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
18her; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Mildred Wiley as an expression of
21our deepest sympathy.
