HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to recognize the Delta Sigma Theta 
4Sorority on Delta Day 2019; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was 
6founded by 22 illustrious college-educated young women on the 
7campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C.  in January 1913 
8and is celebrating its 106th anniversary; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, Shortly after the founding of Delta Sigma Theta 
10Sorority, the 22 young women participated in the Women's 
11Suffrage March and demanded rights for women, including the 
12right to vote, which transformed the role of women in the 
13democratic process; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an 
15organization of college-educated women committed to the 
16constructive development of its members through public service 
17with a primary focus on the black community; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, The sorority's programs are implemented through 
19its Five Point Programmatic Thrust, which includes economic 
20development, educational development, physical and mental 
21health, political awareness and involvement, and international

1awareness and involvement; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Members of the sorority are accomplished 
3corporate, civic, and public officials and acclaimed scholars; 
4and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has a membership of more than 
6200,000 college-educated women in more than 1020 chapters 
7worldwide, of which 20 chapters are located in the State of 
8Illinois; and
  
 
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission 
10instituted Delta Days in the Nation's Capital as an annual 
11legislative conference to increase member involvement in the 
12public policy-making process; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Delta Day at the Illinois State Capitol has 
14occurred on an annual basis with members from across the State 
15in attendance; therefore, be it
  
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
17HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
18we recognize the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on Delta Day 2019 
19and its theme of "A Community Silenced: STAND and BE COUNTED, 
20Census 2020"; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
2presented to Delta Sigma Theta as a symbol of our respect and 
3esteem.
