HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kate
4Lane, who passed away on February 2, 2020; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kate Lane was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Fred
6and Gladys Peoples on April 12, 1937; she grew up in Memphis,
7where she attended school and was a member of the Metropolitan
8Baptist Church; she relocated to Chicago in 1953 and married
9Glen Lane; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kate Lane joined the Bethel Lutheran Church in
11August of 1965; she was active with the Lutheran Church Women
12and served on the executive committee of the Synod Women's
13Organization; she joined the staff of Bethel New Life in 1979
14as coordinator of housing initiatives and later director, where
15she directed senior home repairs and supervised the rehab of
16the Monroe Leamington Cooperative and other projects; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Kate Lane was the "landlord" for former President
18Jimmy Carter and welcomed him and Roselyn to the soon-to-be
19rehabbed Guyon building while he was a part of the Habitat for
20Humanity, building four homes in cooperation with Bethel; her
21largest project was the Beth-Anne Center (former St. Anne
22Hospital); and

1    WHEREAS, Kate Lane shared her culinary skills as the chief
2cook for Bethel's Gumbo Gala held in the Garfield Park
3Conservatory; she also joined friend Mary Nelson in global
4travel; they went to Germany to visit Mary's family and gave
5presentations on Bethel; she later traveled with Mary to
6Tanzania, visiting Lutheran outposts and communities; she also
7traveled to Australia and Timor Lestea and shared with rural
8community leaders; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Kate Lane retired from Bethel New Life in 2004 and
10shared her wisdom and conviviality from her home; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Kate Lane was preceded in death by her husband,
12Glen; her parents, Fred and Gladys Peoples; her brother,
13Clarence; her sisters, Alice and Nellie; her granddaughter,
14Linda; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kate Lane is survived by her children, Marcia
16(Bernard), Ronald, and Linda; her sister, Barbara; her
17grandchildren, Nathon (Kristen), Natalie, Glenda (Michael),
18and Tyrone; and her great-grandchildren, Naailah, Ariel,
19Mikey, Afawape, Ashanti, and Malik; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1we mourn the passing of Kate Lane and extend our sincere
2condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
3her; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Kate Lane as an expression of our
6deepest sympathy.
