SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, According to the National Cancer Institute, over
315,000 children and adolescents from birth to age 19 will be
4diagnosed with cancer each year; cancer remains the second
5leading cause of death in children and adolescents; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Although survival rates for most childhood
7cancers have improved in recent decades, there is still much
8work to be done; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Last year, at age 16, Nora Leonard was diagnosed
10with Hepatocellular Neoplasm, a common form of liver cancer;
11her parents, Kelly Leonard and Anne Libera, longtime creative
12executives at Second City, created the Twitter hashtag Team
13Nora as a way to send updates about her treatment; it quickly
14took off and found the support of actors, comedians, and
15politicians; from Tina Fey to Hillary Clinton, people across
16the United States and abroad sent selfies and tweets to show
17their support for Team Nora; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Team Nora has become not only a great way to
19support Nora in her fight against Hepatocellular Neoplasm but
20also a way to show children and teenagers across the United
21States that they are not alone in their fight against cancer;

1    WHEREAS, Team Nora presents a newly-found awareness for
2childhood cancers; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare July 10,
52019 Team Nora Day in the State of Illinois to raise awareness
6of childhood cancers and the pressing need for continued
7research and innovative treatment; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we support the many patients and their
9caregivers, the doctors, nurses, and hospital volunteers who
10help these children; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12presented to Nora Leonard, Kelly Leonard, and Anne Libera as an
13expression of our esteem and respect.
