|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Daniel M. "Dan" Pierce of Highland Park, |
4 | | who passed away on February 13, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce was born in Chicago on March 31, 1928; |
6 | | he graduated from New Trier High School; he earned degrees from |
7 | | Harvard College and Harvard Law School; he served in the U.S. |
8 | | Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps and attended the U.S. |
9 | | Air Force Command & Staff School during the Korean War; he |
10 | | married Rhoda Ann Kaplan; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce was with the law firm of Altheimer, |
12 | | Gray, Naiburg, Strasburger & Lawton for the remainder of his |
13 | | legal career; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce served in the Illinois House of |
15 | | Representatives from 1965 to 1985; during that time, he was the |
16 | | chairman of the House Environment Committee; he was very proud |
17 | | to be involved in the passage of a special education bill for |
18 | | school age children and also the Pollution Control Act in 1969, |
19 | | a year before the Federal Government took action; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce served as a three-term mayor of |
21 | | Highland Park from 1987 to 1995 and 1999 to 2003; his |
|

1 | | accomplishments in office included overseeing the completion |
2 | | of the Clavey Road clover leaf project, working on the Sister |
3 | | Cities Foundation, and preserving the former American Legion |
4 | | building on Sheridan Road, which is now home to The Art Center |
5 | | of Highland Park; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce was elected to the North Shore Water |
7 | | Reclamation District, formerly known as the North Shore |
8 | | Sanitary District, in 2004; he was currently serving as its |
9 | | president and had been in that position for over a decade; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce further served his community as a |
11 | | member of the American Legion Board, the Healthcare Foundation |
12 | | of Highland Park Board of Trustees, and the Rotary Club of |
13 | | Highland Park/Highwood; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce was respected for his wit and |
15 | | intelligence; he was a mentor, friend, and colleague to all who |
16 | | came to know him; he leaves behind a legacy of community and |
17 | | public service accomplishments; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce was preceded in death by his sister, |
19 | | Ellen (Gardner) Grant; and
|
20 | | WHEREAS, Dan Pierce is survived by his wife of almost 39 |
21 | | years, Rhoda Ann Pierce; his sons, Andrew (Margalynne), Anthony |

1 | | (Teresa), and Theodore (Anne); his stepsons, Eric (Blake) and |
2 | | Peter (Katie); his grandchildren, Rebecca, Catherine, Oliver, |
3 | | Martin, Ellen, Phoebe, and Roscoe; and his sister, Susan |
4 | | (Louis) Axelrod; therefore, be it

5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
6 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
7 | | Daniel M. "Dan" Pierce and extend our sincere condolences to |
8 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
9 | | further
|
10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
11 | | presented to the family of Dan Pierce as an expression of our |
12 | | deepest sympathy.
