|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of William T. "Bill" Henderson of Urbana, |
4 | | who passed away on June 11, 2020; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was born at the family home in |
6 | | Ridge Farm to Ted and Susie (Satterlee) Henderson on October 5, |
7 | | 1929; he graduated from Ridge Farm High School and received a |
8 | | scholarship to the University of Illinois to study |
9 | | floriculture; he also became active in the McKinley Foundation |
10 | | student group; he received his bachelor's degree from the |
11 | | University of Illinois in the spring of 1951 and was |
12 | | commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army's |
13 | | Quartermaster Corps; he completed his active service and was |
14 | | promoted to first lieutenant; he received an honorable |
15 | | discharge from the Army; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson returned to the U.S. and was |
17 | | accepted at McCormick Theological Seminary; he married Kathryn |
18 | | Luther on August 22, 1953; he received his master's degree in |
19 | | library science from the University of Chicago and his Master |
20 | | of Divinity from McCormick Seminary; he served for seven years |
21 | | as the seminary's first acquisitions librarian; he also became |
22 | | an ordained minister; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, As his wife was invited to join the faculty of the |
2 | | Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Bill |
3 | | Henderson accepted a position at the University of Illinois at |
4 | | Urbana-Champaign in 1965 in the emerging field of preserving |
5 | | library collections as they aged; he and his wife taught |
6 | | preservation courses as a team and organized conferences |
7 | | related to preservation; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson received the University of |
9 | | Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science |
10 | | Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Award in May of |
11 | | 2011; and |
12 | | WHEREAS, For many years, Bill Henderson was the secretary |
13 | | of the Alpha Chapter of Beta Phi Mu, the international library |
14 | | and information science honor society; in November of 2014, he |
15 | | and his wife were recognized by the Alpha Chapter with the |
16 | | establishment of the Kathryn Luther and William T. Henderson |
17 | | Award; and
|
18 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was a member of the Champaign |
19 | | County Farm Bureau; for many years, he and his wife served on |
20 | | the selection committee that determined the recipients of the |
21 | | Champaign County Farm Bureau Foundation agricultural |
22 | | scholarships; he received a Luther Circle Award for his service |
23 | | to the scholarship program; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was a member of St. Peter's United |
2 | | Church of Christ, where he served on various committees and had |
3 | | a role in Christian education endeavors, his favorite role; as |
4 | | an ordained minister, he could perform other ministerial |
5 | | duties; he was also a longtime member of the American Library |
6 | | Association, the American Theological Library Association, and |
7 | | the Illinois Library Association; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson was preceded in death by his |
9 | | parents; his brother, Joseph David Henderson; his niece, Cheryl |
10 | | Lynn Henderson; his parents-in-law, Carl F. and Ida Lietz |
11 | | Luther; and his sister-in-law, Mildred Luther; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Bill Henderson is survived by his wife of 67 |
13 | | years, Kathryn; his sister-in-law, Annette Gulder Henderson; |
14 | | his nieces, Susan Tracy McDaniel and Carol Lynn Christenson; |
15 | | and his nephew, Joseph David Henderson; therefore, be it

16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
18 | | Bill Henderson and extend our sincere condolences to his |
19 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
20 | | further
