AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 2814

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 2814 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
510-16.5 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/10-16.5)
7    Sec. 10-16.5. Oath of office. Each school board member,
8before taking his or her seat on the board, shall take an oath
9of office, administered as determined by the board, in
10substantially the following form:
11        I, (name of member or successful candidate), do
12    solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully
13    discharge the duties of the office of member of the Board
14    of Education (or Board of School Directors, as the case
15    may be) of (name of school district), in accordance with
16    the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of

1    the State of Illinois, and the laws of the State of
2    Illinois, to the best of my ability.
3        I further swear (or affirm) that:
4        I shall respect taxpayer interests by serving as a
5    faithful protector of the school district's assets;
6        I shall encourage and respect the free expression of
7    opinion by my fellow board members and others who seek a
8    hearing before the board, while respecting the privacy of
9    students and employees;
10        I shall recognize that a board member has no legal
11    authority as an individual and that decisions can be made
12    only by a majority vote at a public board meeting;
13        I shall abide by majority decisions of the board,
14    while retaining the right to seek changes in such
15    decisions through ethical and constructive channels;
16        As part of the Board of Education (or Board of School
17    Directors, as the case may be), I shall accept the
18    responsibility for my role in the equitable and quality
19    education of every student in the school district;
20        I shall foster with the board extensive participation
21    of the community, formulate goals, define outcomes, and
22    set the course for (name of school district);
23        I shall assist in establishing a structure and an
24    environment designed to ensure all students have the
25    opportunity to attain their maximum potential through a
26    sound organizational framework;

1        I shall strive to ensure a continuous assessment of
2    student achievement and all conditions affecting the
3    education of our children, in compliance with State law;
4        I shall serve as education's key advocate on behalf of
5    students and our community's school (or schools) to
6    advance the vision for (name of school district); and
7        I shall strive to work together with the district
8    superintendent to lead the school district toward
9    fulfilling the vision the board has created, fostering
10    excellence for every student in the areas of academic
11    skills, knowledge, citizenship, and personal development.

13    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
