HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The American Legion pioneered the Buddy Check
3concept under past National Commander Brett Reistad; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The intent was for all American Legion posts to
5conduct Buddy Checks twice a year, around American Legion's
6birthday and Veterans Day; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The initiative demonstrated immediate success;
8soon, the Buddy Check program transitioned to year round,
9allowing American Legion posts to conduct these checks
10whenever it made the most sense on the local level; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, American Legion
12posts have used Buddy Checks to help obtain prescription
13refills for veterans confined to their homes and to connect
14with isolated veterans who might be missing their comrades;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, In other cases, American Legion posts have
17delivered food, personal protective equipment, and other
18resources to veterans after learning about their needs during
19these wellness checks; and
 
20    WHEREAS, With a week dedicated to Buddy Checks across

1America, we will be able to reach even more veterans and save
2even more lives nationwide; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The U.S. Senate has approved legislation that
4would make the Buddy Check program for veterans a national
5program; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
8SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the U.S. House of
9Representatives to approve legislation to make the Veterans
10Buddy Check program a federal program; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12delivered to the Illinois congressional delegation.
