| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The Village of Kenilworth is located | ||||||
| 3 | approximately 17 miles north of downtown Chicago and is the | ||||||
| 4 | newest of the eight Chicago suburban "North Shore" | ||||||
| 5 | communities; and | ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Kenilworth was founded in 1889 when Joseph Sears | ||||||
| 7 | purchased 223.6 acres of land between the Chicago and North | ||||||
| 8 | Western Railroad and Lake Michigan for $150,300; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Joseph Sears and several of his associates formed | ||||||
| 10 | The Kenilworth Company to build his suburban dream; in 1891, | ||||||
| 11 | all lots were offered at $60 an acre, significantly above the | ||||||
| 12 | $15 an acre average for nearby property, and sold within 12 | ||||||
| 13 | months;
on May 6, 1896, the Village reached the required 300 | ||||||
| 14 | residents and was incorporated; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Kenilworth's layout was designed to take | ||||||
| 16 | advantage of the natural features and beauty of the land; | ||||||
| 17 | streets were platted to maximize the availability of sunlight | ||||||
| 18 | in each home, utilities were placed underground, no alleys or | ||||||
| 19 | fences were permitted, construction standards were high, and | ||||||
| 20 | there were large lots and paved streets; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Kenilworth contains houses designed by a number | ||||||

| 1 | of esteemed architects; George W. Maher fashioned the | ||||||
| 2 | limestone pillars that mark the Sheridan Road entrances to | ||||||
| 3 | Kenilworth and the original Kenilworth Avenue Fountain; | ||||||
| 4 | Franklin Burnham joined The Kenilworth Company and designed | ||||||
| 5 | the railroad station and the Kenilworth Union Church; Frank | ||||||
| 6 | Lloyd Wright designed the Hiram Baldwin, a prairie school | ||||||
| 7 | house, in 1905; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, In 1899, the local women's club selected street | ||||||
| 9 | names such as Abbotsford and Essex, which were adopted by the | ||||||
| 10 | Village; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Kenilworth expanded by 40 acres in 1922 with the | ||||||
| 12 | 40 acres in the southwest belonging to the North Shore Golf | ||||||
| 13 | Club; the Village now consists of a total area of 0.61 square | ||||||
| 14 | miles; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, The Village population reached 2,501 in 1930; in | ||||||
| 16 | 2010, the census counted 2,513 people living in Kenilworth | ||||||
| 17 | with 800 households and 699 families; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Kenilworth has its own public school district | ||||||
| 19 | with its only school being Joseph Sears School; and | ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Notable places in Kenilworth include Kenilworth | ||||||
| 21 | Assembly Hall, Kenilworth Beach, the Ware Garden, Mahoney | ||||||

| 1 | Park, the Hiram Baldwin House, and the Kenilworth Club, among | ||||||
| 2 | others; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 3 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 4 | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 5 | we congratulate the Village of Kenilworth on its 125 year | ||||||
| 6 | anniversary on May 6, 2021; and be it further
| ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 8 | delivered to the Village of Kenilworth.
