HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Hoopeston on
4the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Hoopeston was founded in northern Vermilion
6County in July 1871 at the crossroads of two railroads, which
7were the Chicago, Danville, and Vincennes Railroad, known
8today as the C&EI, and the now-defunct Lafayette, Bloomington,
9and Western Railroads; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Hoopeston was named after Thomas Hoopes, who
11donated the land on which the railroads were built; by 1872, it
12had grown to 70 buildings and a population of 245; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Hoopeston has had a proud history in the
14agricultural business and in manufacturing, and the city still
15possesses a canning factory and a can manufacturing factory;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Hoopeston was once known as the sweet corn
18capital of the world; paying tribute to this tradition, it
19hosts the National Sweetcorn Festival every Labor Day weekend;
20in conjunction with the festival, it hosts the National
21Sweetheart Pageant, which brings contestants to Hoopeston from

1across the United States; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Hoopeston's sweet corn legacy is further honored
3by the Hoopeston Area School District's nickname being the
4Cornjerkers, which first emerged in the 1920s and has earned
5the school district nationwide honors as one of the most
6unique high school mascots; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Hoopeston is an ever evolving city and is adding
8unique stores, re-establishing some of its historic buildings
9into viable business options, and continuing to add different
10types of businesses in the health field; and
 
11    WHEREAS, To celebrate its sesquicentennial anniversary,
12Hoopeston is holding a number of events and activities
13starting at the end of May and culminating in a week-long
14celebration from June 27 to July 3, 2021; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we congratulate the City of Hoopeston on its 150th
18anniversary; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to Hoopeston Mayor Bill Crusinberry as an expression
21of our esteem and respect.
